Arse. Rotten tank

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Apr 24, 2010.

  1. Yup, the Ducati. Underside of the tank is leaking lke a teabag.

Pro Twins are doubtful it can be brazed - there are several points where
it's bubbling. I suppose an expert could chop out the whole bottom of
the tank, braze/weld in new metal, make good and re-paint. Anyone know
    such a bod?

New tanks are unobtainium now, and £800+VAT should you find one. Used
tanks - well, you risk copping another teabag. But at least ther's a
choice of 600, 750 and 900 out there. They all fit.

Anyone know someone who's got a perfect condition tank? Preferably with
1997 decals, but not essential. NOS would be fantastic - the problem is
that this could actually write off the bike, which seems daft.

Arse, arse, arse. All ready for summer, and this happens.

Was this discovery a result of "tinkle clink splash"?

No. But it awfully sounds like the Morini tank. Depends on the size of
the holes in the colander, though.
Worst case you might have a word with our "local" paint bod, they
sealed the Morini tank with something that should keep it from pissing
    out its contents.

  5. Chewing gum is better. Totally petrol proof. But this one has moles
    multiple, looks like.

There's what looks like a good tank on Ebay Fatherland - I'm awaiting a
    translation from Timo, hopefully...

  6. Sort of. There was so much kludge in there I examined the outside of the
tank very closely. Hm, is this paint coming away.

    <fx: picks with fingernail>

    AH ****!!!!!

Frantic operation to pump out the tank (I'd just filled it up, of
course) and transfer the fuel to The Doctor's Micra, thereby doubling
    its value.

Is there enough left to bodge it with tank sealant ?.

A few years ago I had a Mercedes diesel tank repaired by a company in
Bristol. Ask around local backstreet car mechanics, they will most
likely know of someone local who repairs tanks.

CAUTION:- fuel tanks must be expertly purged before welding or brazing,
the least amount of fuel residue can make it go BANG.

When I had the RD painted in 2001 the bottom of the tank fell away, they
brazed it up and recommended POR15 as belt and braces. It hasn't leaked
since, wasn't even that fiddly to do. I have a very badly rotted RD tank
that I'll be experimenting on when I eventually get a MIG, that'll get
POR15'd as well unless I destroy it while replacing the bottom half.

Having seen POR15 at first hand I would think you've got a good chance
of rescuing your current tank, and compared to the cost of a new one
it's worth a go if ebay doesn't turn up the goods.

Failing that seeing as I'm down to one bike - 50 quid and a grab bag of
    werthers?

Both Guzzis and the Aprilia have plastic tanks. My YZ of course also
has a plastic tank, . In short, all my bikes have plastic tanks.

    </smug>

Paint still manages to bubble o the V11 though.

<delurks> I've got similar problems with my Morini so it's currently
with this firm for a complete renovation:

    http://www.fueltanks.co.uk/pages/bike.html

They quote about £200 plus VAT for the job but you need to figure in a
repaint but still cheaper than a new tank.

  13. Forget it. I want a proper metal repair. I've got that stuff lining the
tank of my TS250, more to stop crap getting into the carb than anything
    else, which is its forte.

Trouble with Kreem, POR15 and the rest of them is that they're not
    really structural.

I've got a seriously rotten tank and replacement or a painstaking metal
repair are - for me - the only options.

Excellent! This is what I want, and Boxerboy lives five miles away.

    Thanks. I've emailed them.

  18. They're not really into metal bashing, but I hadn't considered them, so
    maybe worth a call.

Not made clear on the page, but they do fix any holes etc as well as
part of the process. I'm hoping my tank will be done this next week
or so, then Timo can have the temporary tank I'm currently using.
Seems to be a season a duff tanks as I dropped my Triumph and put a
crease in the tank on that as well.

Exactly.Part of the problem with mine is that the ancient tank liner
has broken up so it's got to be done properly.
