This isn't off topic, I'm a big fat **** and i'm sure its the reason my bike
    is feeling slower and slower.

Does anyone here want to recommend or warn me against the Atkins? I seem to
be reading about people losing a stone every two weeks, left, right and
    centre.

....and yes i'm watching the telly program.

There is your mistake fatty, you should be exercising.

Well I started the diet a few months ago, and in the first week, lost 4lbs.
I admit the `induction` phase of 2 weeks is a bit of a killer, having to
completely eradicate everything you are used to, but once you get the idea
of what you can/can`t eat, you can `relax` the rules slightly. I harly ever
eat bread or pasta now though (which I used to love) and I don`t miss them..
I still go out for drinks with my mates, and have the occasional chocs-my
eating mainly tends to be lots of different salad meats, with nice, tasty
addiotions, such as sun-dried tomatoes, olives, salad dressing,
cheeses.Chops, bacon and fish I like too. I will also eat fruit, even though
about the only fruit you are supposed to be able to eat is rhubarb!! Its all
about being sensible and (most importantly) making sure you eat ENOUGH at
each meal. If you have 3 proper meals each day, you will find your appetite
reducing, especially having to have a large breakfast like ham & cheese
omelette before starting the day! The downside I find is the fact that you
have to make virtually everything you want to eat; no convenience foods on
    Atkins...
To date, I have lost over a stone, and if I were to go to my gym more
frequently, I`m sure it would be a bit more (not much), but at least I would
be fit & toned as well as lighter!! I realise it doesnt work for everybody,
as some people don`t take to it too well, but its worth trying, but don`t
treat it as total Gospel like a lot of people have.Enjoy!

The only way I've ever lost weight is through exercise, altering my diet has
never worked as after a couple of weeks I always think 'sod this for a
laugh' and revert. Life's too short not to eat the things you like.

  6. Well join the club - well about the big and fat bit.
I'm awaiting the verdict from my doctor as to why I've been feeling like
shit recently. I know my weight is going to be part of the problem and a
change will be prescribed as part of the solution - a consultation with
dietician has already been suggested as have weight loss pills!

I was feeling so awful that I thought it might be diabetes - thankfully
that has been ruled out but my god has it made me stop and think. The
prospect of a potentially life threatening / impairing condition was
enough to draw me up short.

I am totally convinced that no right thinking doctor would suggest
people use the Atkins or any other fad diet. They would prescribe a
lifestyle change - which in essence means less beer, less junk food,
less sugary drinks, cakes, biscuits etc. And more fruit, vegetables, a
balanced diet, good sleep and much more exercise. Oh and less stress.

Now I've only really experienced relative slimness and fitness twice in
my life - once as a teenager when I exercised regularly and after I
"came out" much later in life. Coming out I lost two stone with no
effort, was perfectly disciplined with my food and loved life. That
shows what getting rid of anxiety and stress can do for you. I am
firmly of the opinion that the only person who can make you lose weight
is you and that it is really quite simple in what you have to do - it's
the self discipline that is difficult.
which confirms for me that it is a fad and not worth paying any
    attention to.

Eat a bit less generally for a week or two to get you kick started, and
get off your arse and burn the calories. Everything else is stupidity
and will only cause temporary weight loss.

The only way to lose weight properly is to burn more calories.

Mash let forth with a mighty belch and uttered :
Get a bigger, faster bike then. Oh, and some training to go along with it.
Smacks of fad. Doubtless there is a short term gain, but as with all folk
who diet, as soon as they eat normally, or reduce whatever exercise program
they're on, back on goes the weight.

Anyways, I love bread, rice and pasta washed down with beer, cider and gin
far too much to cast them aside. For afters?, a banana.

I flicked to it out of curiosity. Didn't see the whole program, only the
last 25 minutes of it. Doesn't seem too long ago that pasta was the diet
revolution, or was that high fibre. Or fruit, or pulses.

  10. I want to warn you against it.

Try this: get a diary and one of those calorie books.
Without changing your diet, write down everything you eat
or drink along with an estimate of its calorific value.
Total it up for each day.
After a couple of weeks it will be perfectly clear how
you can drop a thousand calories per day without really trying.

Or take up a competitive sport.

Before the verdict comes two things worth trying (non medical) are
drinking fresh orange juice every morning and also getting out for a
    half hour walk at lunchtime.

I find that when I'm run down doing both for a week or 2 seem to make me
feel a lot better in general.

If you do those already then maybe you're a bit stuck.)

But as a book these 5 lines are rather too little - even if they do sum it
    up perfectly.

One day I shall cycle the 7 miles to off licence - then when I have cycled
back I shall feel virtuous when I drink the beer - but not yet.

I've never tried the Atkins, nor have I ever been on a "diet", *but*, if
I look in the mirror and see I've eaten too many pies / curries, I force
myself *not* to eat for a couple of days. I don't mean starve myself but
just go hungry for a few days. I've been doing it all my life and it
seems to work. I lost 4 and a half stone in four months by eating more
fruit and veg, missing one meal a day and cutting out the crisps,
chocolate and biscuits when I went on one hell of a food bender.

I *SAW* my gut when I was having a shave one day in the mirror. that was
it, I had to do something. Funny thing was, I never wanted to eat shite
stuff after that, everything I ate was "that's going to be another ten
minutes on the treadmill". It's only after I stopped going that my
weight started creeping up again and my metabolism slowed down.

I'm now 35lbs lighter than I was this time last year. My blood pressure
is down and my cholesterol is 4.6, which according to my doctor
indicates that I am "eating a perfect diet".

As far as the loss goes, it followed a steady curve with a nice plateau
at the bottom which I am more of less sustaining (it goes up & down but
    does stay about the same)

If you do decide to do it read the book from cover to cover at least
    twice before you start.

And be aware that eating out becomes a real pain and you can't drink
    beer or lager.

Oh and my bike goes a lot quicker but the handling is worse due to the
change in the ratio of sprung to unsprung weight.

Diabetics of some types have been living on an almost carb free diet for
decades without harm, to the contrary in fact. You must take regular
exercise and consume sufficient fluids in tandem. Keep the fat/salt intake
at a reasonable level and your liver should be fine.

Weight loss is a given, if it doesn't happen and your obesity is around your
middle ask your Doc about a course of a drug to increase your insulin
    sensitivity.

The Atkins diet worked for me at the beginning of the year - I shed a
couple of stones but it all went back on over the next few months.

Even though I'm doing a fairly physical job, according to my doc the
most effective exercise is the stuff you do outside your work - walking,
cycling, jogging, whatever, for its own sake. 20 mins a day, he reckons.

If I can echo Paul C. here; the only times in my adult life I've been
slim and fit were due to lifestyle changes - a period of farm work had
me down to 13 stones and fit as a flea, I thought nothing of 10 mile
walks over the moorlands looking for sheep (insert lewd comment), at the
same time I was eating a mostly veggie diet (apart from when we ate our
    own sheep/chickens/pigs).

The other occasions were similar - manual factory shift work shed stones
and toned me up well, as did an earlier period of working on sites
    installing gensets.
