Only when you can't afford Jarrah. Pine is only 160-180 k/tonne, you can
only teach small easy lessons with that. Jarrah, OTOH, is around 800
k/tonne. the lesson is better learnt.

When I was visiting my son a few years ago in Vic, he needed a few bits of
wood so we went to a timber merchant. They had a variety of timbers and said
"This is the cheapest and best for your purpose". Not being familiar with
east coast timbers I asked what it was. "OBH". WTF is OBH? Ordinary Builders
    Hardwood, apparently.

  8. Theo, are you kidding 160-180 k/tonne
what is your secret conversion rate
    k/tonne = kilogram per tonne
or is supposed to be $160 per tonne
or is there another timber measurement I don't know about??

Oops, I meant kg/cubic metre. Turns out my memory failed me anyway. Pine is
around 450-500 kg/cubic metre and Jarrah is around 850.

It would be nice if it cost $160 per tonne. I bought a piece of ebony about
20 years ago. it was 4 x 2 inches and 5 feet long. I paid $165 for it then.
I still have about 1/3 of it.

Might be hard to swing the 4x2 over your head.
A party trick is having a small piece of ebony, about a toothpick size, so
that it feels like it weighs nothing. Drop in a glass of water and watch it
    sink.

    More info:

It's a wireless network and they want to monitor/control download
limits for each individual computer on the network.

The router is a Netgear DG834GSP v3. I suspect it won't run Gargoyle.

If a new router is required to run Gargoyle, what recommendations do
    you have?

  19. The list of routers that Gargoyle supports is here:

    http://www.gargoyle-router.com/wiki/doku.php?id=install_guide

    I observe the following:
    1. Only really serious geeks should attempt this.
    2. The router model you quoted is not a wireless router, according to
Netgear, as far as I can see.
    3. Only someone who has successfully done a Gargoyle install on their
own gear should be allowed to do it on gear belonging to someone else.
    4. The Gargoyle solution requires considerable ongoing geeky support,
which doesn't sound like a sensible solution for a family who need you
to ask this sort of question in the first place.
    5. They say: " Gargoyle should run on any router that uses a mips
architecture, has either a broadcom or atheros based wireless card, and
has at least 4MB of flash. " If you don't know how to find out whether
it does or does not have any of this stuff, you don't know enough to
    start this process.

I commend to you my simple solution further up the thread, or Marty's.

The router IS a wireless router, I can assure you.

I have suggested they take this problem to a geek.

I get the feeling they're more interested in whinging about it rather
than fixing it. I should have known better than to get sucked into
trying to help them. I guess the xmas spirit got the better of me.

I agree with the "better parenting" idea too. 4x2.

Thanks for yours and everyone else's comments though.
