Inskip Motorcycles’ Richard Hair is officially the world’s best Yamaha
    motorcycle service technician.

The 46 year old from Raymond Terrace, NSW, has scooped the 2003 World
Yamaha Motorcycle Technician Grand Prix held at Yamaha’s Japan HQ
    recently.

After winning the Oceania leg of the competition, Hair progressed to
the finals where he triumphed over 18 contestants representing
countries from all over the world. “I thought I’d given it a fair go
but was a bit surprised to win because the competition was so strong,’
explained a jubilant Hair who put his victory down to “a certain
amount of study and familiarity with the product courtesy of the
    Yamaha Training Academy program.”

Yamaha Motor Corporation President Mr. Hasegawa and former GP rider
Norick Abe were on hand to observe the Grand Final and award prizes.

Hair was impressed with the level of competition, particularly by
technicians from developing nations such as second placed Taiwan and
third placed Thailand. Each technician worked on models distributed in
    his home market.

“It was a real honour to visit Japan as a special guest in the first
place. But to be accepted into the Yamaha family and to understand the
company from a cultural point of view is the biggest bonus for me,”
    explained Hair.
The Tech Grand Prix is a contest designed to measure Yamaha service
technician’s practical and theoretical skills. By recognising the
contribution made by service technicians across the world, Yamaha aims
to raise the standard of service within the motorcycle industry.

The biannual contest consists of a written exam and 11 practical tasks
that set out to measure a range of skills from fault finding and
diagnostic ability to customer relations and computer competence.

Excellent effort from a local. A little further north in Port Macquarie at
"Rockys" (Rocks Motorcycles), their chief mechanic has twice won a similar
award for BMW service. I've heard on the grapevine that his knowledge and
"sixth sense" is profoundly scary and if I had a Beemer bike I'd certainly
need no more excuse to take the old Thunderbolts/Oxley for each service.
However, if I had a Beemer, I'd probably already be living in Port Macq
given its status as NSW's largest retirement destination.... :)

Now I just need to find a local Honda mechanic with similar credentials (and
    a generous approach to costing).

    Cheers,
