Are there really some train drivers who earn 50 grand?

If so, I need a change of career.

"Earn" then yes, easily - there are some who have overtime(!) of 30K.

"Basic salary", then yes and it's NXEC (former GNER) when the second
element of the pay deal comes in March '09.

A lazy bastard driver on Southern (my employers) who only works what
they're booked to (4 day week, 35 hour week) earn about £38K. Easily
increased to £45K+ - I'm of the view any overtime worked is potentially a
full time job for someone else who might want to be a train driver.

It would have been quicker to go to Waterloo and change at Clapham for
Vic. West coast route is slow if you get stuck behind a stopper.

I got to the station at 16.10 and the 16.11 to Victoria was ready to go,
but the 16.30 to Waterloo was still a while off.

The doors were closing and I needed to make a decision.

    I chose wrong.

I only work a 35 hours week myself, though that is spread over a full
    5 days.

Of course, I earn rather more than that much for sitting on my arse
all day, drinking espresso, and making sarcastic comments over
    internal email.
hardly a fair comparion - coal miners actually had to work for a
    living.

highest-paid unskilled job in the country, innit?

Must be fucking boring, though, especially on some of the pissy little
10 miles in and out of London, stopping every half a mile lines.

Noooo! They're the really exciting ones.

You should have seen Steve F at the LT museum, playing on the driving
simulator. "Steve, you do this all day". "Oh no, this is a *different
    line*."

And the angst on his face when we tried to make him leave the train
between stations was a joy to behold.

Considering that last week I piled in and grabbed a 78 hour week I
think it's time to apply for a job as a train driver.

You don't have bloody cyclists and taxis wandering about in front of you.
Anything that shows up in front of you is fair game - stick the brakes on as
hard as you like and you'll still cream them, with the added joy of knowing
you've smeared the passengers up the front of the coaches. You don't even
have to see the passengers. And if you nail three suicides in a month, you
can retire on full pay. That's got to be worth a go.
