Back into motorcycles after 16 years of raising kids

Long story short, I sold my bikes when my kids were small. Thought it was
    the right thing to do.

Now that they are both teenagers I have decided to buy a bike and I did.

I was wondering, in Texas, what papers or magazines do you look at to see
what rides are coming up and stuff like that. I have been doing long
distant bicycle rides and I know they are usually for charity and there are
a bunch of newspaper and websites that keep you informed on location, time,
    cost, itinerary.

Any help on where to look and where to avoid would be appreciated.

PS I'm in Houston if that makes a difference for which places to look.

As Grand Wiszardly Moderator for this group, let me welcome you back into
the motorcycling world.. Damn.. you stayed away too long.. There is no
reason for you to search furthur than this group for any of your needs..
There is ample reporting of rides and events, to keep you busy.. Even in the
Houston area.. I might also invite you to relocate to the DFW metroplex, to
enhance your quality of life..Second choice, however, would have to be the
Austin/San Antonio area, but a word of caution, those folks in that area are
mostly politicians and very aggressive, in that way.. Bah... Now..
formalities aside, there are certain contributors on this newsgroup who
should be avoided... Fullstate is probably the biggest problem in the group,
as he spreads false rumors about me and cannot be trusted.. Besides, he
rides some kind of eyetalion motorcycle .. Then, of course, there is Charles
Soto.. Now Charles is a new father and has a lovely wife who doesn't
particularly prefer his lifestyle as a biker.. His posts are usually
prohetic and too damn short.. Of course, I can't fail to mention Waco.. he
is a devout Harley rider with a complex.. Rob May and his bride are both
examples of who to be leary of.. Hell.. they been married for too damn
long.. Another Viewer is definitely to be avoided, at all costs.. He'll
overhaul your computer and ride your motorcycle, all in one swoop, then, he
will call you "sweetie" or "cupcake", just so you don't get offended with
him.. Those are just a few of the "characters" you will encounter on here..
I am the only one out of the bunch who can be trusted, as you can very well
see.. So Cheers on you buddy.. Enjoy and we'll be seein' you, often..

    Your friend in Irving

    look.

Welcome back to riding. After reading the responses to your post (which
was crossposted to rec.motorcycles where I'm reading it from) I see that
you didn't really get many answers to your question. There is a great
newspaper with all the local rides floating around, but I don't have one
handy for the actual name. You can usually pick one up at any bar that
bikers frequent. I usually get the current one at Rocky's Pelican
Junction on Hwy 146 in Baytown. There are quite a few riding groups
that have websites, especially the really big ones. (ROT Rally, Lone
Star Rally, Dawgs on Hawgs) Here are a few links you might like. Hope
this helps. Drop me an email (remove the "remove") and perhaps we can
get together for a local ride. I'm about 20 minutes east of Houston.
Be sure to put Houston Motorcycle Ride in the subject line so I don't
delete your email as spam. Welcome back to riding and be safe out
    there.
    Mag
PS: Does your wife ride also. There are also local groups for
different brands. ie: VROC for Vulcan Owners, Hog Chapters for Harley,
SabMag for Sabre & Magna. etc. It might help to mention what type of
riding you do...cruiser, sportbike, standard. See links below:

Welcome back. I see you've been practical enough to come back with a bike
    you could
also use to pull stumps and plow corn.

  5. i'm in hooterville too.

anything out San Felipe to Bellville/Round Top/Fayettville way you
should know about from the bicycle riding. Scenic Rt 390 is always a
winner to/from Burton almost to Washington area. FM3090 North out of
Waller is real good. go out to Fulshear and then on to Simonton then
turn north or south at Simonton, you can't go wrong. just get out and
ride, forget riding in town, it's a waste of time compared to what's out
there. Go explore and try to get lost, it's the best way to find
things. the best thing about this area is riding season is all year and
it's getting into one of the best parts of the year to ride right now.
