I have aquired a Gilera Coguar for my daughter to run around on (I know its
crap but it was very cheap and with only 600 miles on the clock). It has
the Honda 125cc OHC engine used in many 125cc bikes. It starts, runs well,
stops and generally does everything that it should. However, it will NOT
idle properly. I have adjusted the pilot fuel/air mixture to optimum and
then set the idle speed to a reasonable tickover (engine at normal running
temp). Then I can stand back and listen - it ticks over happily for a while
and then for no apparent reason it speeds up to a very fast idle, then it
may or may not slow down again - if it slows it may well spontaneously speed
up again etc. I have stripped and cleaned the carb twice and there do not
seem to be any blockages. I have tested for an air leak by blowing Holts
"cold start" over exterior of the manifold and carb with no apparent effect.
The throttle cable seems to move quite freely. As it is a very low mileage
bike the carb is unlikely to be worn. My son has a honda 125 with exactly
the same engine/carb combination and it idles perfectly so this is not
likely to be a case of "they all do that sir". What am I missing here?

Does the problem move to your son's bike if you swap the carbs?

No you haven't, you have acquired a Gilera Cougar, thats "Coo-gar" like the
mountain lion, not "Cog-you-ar" like a Jag with a manual gearbox.
    A clue

Listen here, shit for brains - it is a Gilera COGUAR. Thats what it says on
the bike, thats what it says on the handbook, thats what Gilera named it.
Go Google it if you have any doubts. Check your facts before you post you
    **** - (thats "****" like a **** - not "cant" or "count").

In my defence, I was very pissed off last night, and decided to socialise
with Ron [1] and Charlie [2][3].
However, having now googled I have found references to both names.
Unfortunately there do not seem to be any close up pictures of the bike on
the web (that I can find anyway), to verify one way or t'other.

    My conclusions are thus:

    a) Gilera's marketeers are dyslexic, or
    b) Gilera's customers are dyslexic
    c) If it isn't, it ought to be called a Cougar (what the **** is a Coguar
    FFS)
    d) Who gives a shit, sell it and buy a proper bike.

    SNIP!

http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/216169/ look closely at the side panel.

Now if this kind of thing happens again I'm going to have to find your car,
break a window and nick your briefcase.

It's a fair cop, you got me bang to rights guv'nor.

TBH I sort of knew once I started to google, but when have the facts ever
got in the way of a good flaming on UKRM..

Having realised my error I did try to find out about your problem with the
bike to try and redeem myself. All I found were testaments from other
owners saying the bike is a POS, so my last point 4. stands.
    Heh, cnut ;)
