Bahrain GP non-spoiler - question about feet off pegs

The wife and I both noticed this a few times. For reasons I can't
fathom I saw several of the front runners apparently (I am inherently
unreliable) take their left foot right off the footpeg when about to
    enter a RH corner.

Your geography needs work. The Bahrain GP was a F1 car race. I
suspect you mean the Qatar GP/

I thought Twin Ring Motegi was a race track, until I discovered
    Smirnoff.

Whenever I've seen that it means that the rider thinks he is about to
crash. That was something I would never ever do at the race circuit.
I'm surprised that the stewards haven't passed a comment about it
along the lines of not being in total control of the vehicle.

  11. Eh, the guys doing it are all Rossi copycats, wanna-bes from 125/250. Rossi
Actually, the first guy I ever saw doing that wasn't Vale. In fact,
it's only recently I've seen him do it at all and I've followed this
    for a long time.
Regis Laconi, on the other hand, has been doing it prominently for a
while but I'm not sure he's the first. Some of the guys on TV noted
    that
he was taking his foot off consistently. I really wish Regis were in
Moto GP again on one of those Pramac Ducatis or even Nicky's. He's
    got
the makings of a champion except he crashed his title away in 2004

    Mark N snarked:
Schwantz used to do it occasionally. I bet Rossi saw that
    and tried it.

I'm not sure why they're doing it but if you've ever flat tracked
(dirt) you can affect corner entry by swinging your leg about.
That I'm certain of as we do it all the time in the dirt. Acts
like a weight (*IS* a weight) and you can move the
center of mass about. Or keep the center where you want
while the bike goes somewhere else. You may be able to
let the back end get lighter and slidy-er by doing it but I'm
    not sure.

I always assumed that they wanted all their weight on the outside peg
to assist in making the bike doing whatever they were trying to make
it do. That leaves the inside leg free to hang about and do
flamboyant stuff as the rider gets more comfortable with the
    technique.

  16. In flat track it is often used to prevent a fall. The foot actually
touches down and a steel shoe is worn to make it slide across the hard
dirt easier. A few years ago I started noticing motard riders doing
it, but the foot was much further forward and they had no intention of
putting it down. It seems to have come over from moto X. I was told
that the intent is to put more weight on the front wheel. Hard to
tell if that is what Rossi is doing. He isn't getting it as far
forward as the motard guys, but it may be the best he can do from the
different riding position of a GP bike.

I think this is really funny (in a good way). Not doing road racing at
the moment coz of the cost. I kind of lost the faith when it became a
faith if you see what I mean - lets face it, with racing prices at the
mo you either don't race or are a fanatic. Of Corse (sic) its near
impossible to relate ability from the sofa so I won't try. I can
promise that when I next ride it is unlikely I will break bones (mine
or anyone else's) and I will most likely keep up with my fellow
riders. But I doubt I will zoom off into the distance because fast
road riding is not the sort of game man is supposed to become strong
    in.

    Bruce Richmond notes:
That's different. They actually are pushing down some, supporting
some weight. Extreme weight transfer I guess.

Motocrossers do it partly to get their leg out of the way:

We do it on minibikes in my backyard for that reason.

You might be on to something there. Dunno.

That's the way it was intended. Unless you're a
    squid of course.

I seem to have given up road riding, at least the street
bike has gotten all of 3000 miles on it the last 24 months
or so. Haven't been on an asphalt track in a couple of
years. But I still like dirt, as the collection of ancient
and semi-ancient motocrossers in my garage can
    attest.
