Have you seen the fucking price of them?? 80 odd quid each.

I'm not in the habit of moaning about genuine spares prices, but this
seems a touch excessive to me. I may have to remove the head from a
Bandit 600 so I'm checking prices prior to getting the spanners out, and
I think this may mean I attempt to remove the bolts with the cylinder
head on rather than removing it.

Unless.....anyone has used a pattern gasket that was lots and lots
    cheaper with good results.

    Anyone?

FFS, buy 2 sheets of 1mm neoprene and a scalpel. Use the original as a
    template.

  3. You'd be thinking of the cam cover gasket.

I haven't got a chuffing clue TBH... so on a bit of a different tack...
feck... here goes... damn I've had enough booze ce soire.

I'm sort of thinking about becoming what I believe is called a "Born
Again"... erm... well that's not the whole story... law enforcement peeps
should look away now cos what follows is absolute fiction designed purely to
up my kudos level amongst the wholly legal and wholemeal folksies herein:

Um... I have ridden "bigger bikes" and owned a few when I was younger, only
up to 550cc though. (That's absolute fiction hoccifer!)

Being a young and foolish person with nee feckin' money (actually, it was
Clue[tm] that was the biggest problem) I never took my test... [yes OK I am
    cringing]

Now, some umpteen years later it occurs to me that I actually quite enjoyed
riding bikes and wouldn't half mind another (thoroughly legal) stab at it.

Getting through the CBT (not sure if I have to, car licence etc?) and DAS is
not a big deal, frankly if I can't do that then no way should I be two
wheeled again. Already done some checking, seems pretty straight forward.

Dosh also isn't a big problem these days, no need to buy and ride rats no
more (so WTF do I drive a rat of a cage? prolly cos I don't like wasting
    dosh <g>).

So why am I replying to your missive?

Cos the bike I'd been quite seriously considering is the Bandit 600. But
then here there and everywhere I read it refered to as the Bindit,
suggesting to me that it's not exactly the most well behaved machine around?
Then you start telling us that spares are a nightmare. Damn, fuckit, and
buggery bollox... what's wrong with a Bandit 600 eh?

Being >6ft tall and weighing in at 20 stone I can't imagine myself riding
something with less grunt than a modern 600cc (or thereabouts) machine, it
just wouldn't seem fair would it? Also though I'm not actually bothered
about "getting my knee down" or "hoisting one", nor do I particularly like
cruisers, or enormous insurance premiums, so the Bandit 600 appeared to my
innocent eye like the perfect machine... ???

I'd be grateful for any meaningful replies / suggested machines.

I'll also take with suitable aplomb the large dose of slagging that I'm
    likely to receive :)

    Cheers

and those are a little beyond a couple of sheets of neoprene and a scalpel
    anyway.

Never tried a pattern gasket.. never needed to yet.

I'd be tempted to try to get the bolts out in situ, or drop the engine out
    for better access.

Yes. Used a Vesrah top end rebuild kit. For the price of a genuine Yamaha
head gasket, I got everything except the valve stem oil seals.

    It all fitted.

I've got a bandit 600. Its a lot of bike for the money and probably a
good first big bike. It does most things fairly well and can certainly
be thrown around with aplomb in experienced hands. If you take a DAS
test, you may well be on Bandits. If you are 20 stone, the 1200 may be
better... You height shouldn't be a problem... :)

Thanks for that... the only thing that concerns me about the 1200 really is
that insurers will either tell me to piss off or they'll want multiple
thousands of quids per year to cover me.

I think the 12 is only one insurance group higher than the 6 so
shouldn't be too much more. I was quoted 400 quid fully comp on a
brand new one worth 5.5k. To put this in perspective, I'm paying
nearly 900 quid to insure my GSXR1000 fully comp and it's worth the
same. The Bandit is group 12 and the GSXR group 17.
