They charge you if you pay in anything over the counter for most
business bank accounts. Not personal accounts, though.

My EKS business account charges me 2% if I pay in cash over the
counter, 60p for a cheque. AFAIK receiving transfers is free.

Ummm... That would exchange one set of banknotes for another, but wouldn't
    help in laundering the money.

i.e. It doesn't mask the source of the funds - you'd still have no way of
explaining how you got the cash to buy the car you bought in the first
    place.

Cash is *expensive* to deal with.

It's physically bulky, needs to be secured, etc, etc - this is not cheap.

Why do you think your bank adores people who use internet banking, and
encourages "direct debit" arrangements? Costs practically nothing...
    UK - certainly.

Sorry. As others have said they certainly charge businesses.

I once asked the local bike place how they'd like payment, so as to
give them the cheapest option. It turned out that for them, at least,
there was no cheap option. That's when I learned about cash charges.

Yeah, but that's nothing new. The original discussion was about a
private sale, so I assumed this was what the comment was based on.
    Thankfully it seems not.
Yeah, they just have to bear it all as overhead costs. But then it's
all part of their normal business model, so no big deal.

  7. This is also why supermarkets offer cashback at the tills - they get the
public to do their cash handling for them.

Na, they're were great today. Toddled into the bank of busy Saturday,
by-passed the queue to a back room where the counted out the cash and
    wished me happy motoring.

    Vodkas, mostly.
I don't particularly care for Irish whiskey.

  10. Our sandwich machine at work takes copper. I sometimes look like I'm
emptying the moneybox into it but hey... who cares!
