Most of the smaller car rental companies in Portugal still have those
    machines to hold your deposit.

I quite like that idea, as you get the carbon copies handed back to you
when you return the car, so it's unlikely they'll be able to charge you
    on a future date.

    Ace wibbled forthrightly:
Bizarre, it's defo a French bank. I'm going to check with them about an
account if they don't charge for them.

TBH I'm not 100% certain, but I recall when we set it up that a credit
card and/or gold card would cost, and my memory is that a standard
    Carte Bleu was not chargeable.

  4. *Ding*. That was what we used them for in Chile.

And then the car hire company tried to tell us we were to blame for a
stain on the back seat. But by that stage they'd handed back the
    cancelled paper recipts....

But in the time that you're there, they get used by Pedro to create a
fake card. Which he can use because you've told your CC company that
    you're in that country.

I've taken to photographing all dings, dents, scuffs & stains when I
pick a hire-car up these days.

Again, the LTSB (Axa) policy includes off-piste so long as you're with a
    guide.

For the vast majority of people it's probably more than enough.

For the remaining minority, there are alternatives.

No. It's not. Because it means that if you accidentally stray off the
edge of a piste, for example in poor visibility, you're not covered.

AOL, after one place tried to charge me for a chipped windscreen, despite
it being there when I picked it up, and I had fully inclusive cover!

    Exactly. And it's easily done.

Heh. I thought she coped admirably well, as it happens.

Have you booked your next instruction trip yet, BTW? We're off to la
Tania next week, as snoworks.com[1] were (maybe still are?) offering
free, yes really, really free, food and accomodation. So we're just
paying £280 each for the training and getting, allegedly, £450 (each)
worth of an en-suite, double-bedded chalet room for the week.

    Nice.

[1] I'm guessing they'd pre-paid the chalet but were so underbooked
they're just trying to recoup their losses.

Wait until the motorcycle insurers figure out about that one.

    "You're not covered for off-road"
"But I was on the road until I hit the diesel"
    etc

Ditto. And I found myself well off piste in the steep bowl below
Cairnwell at Glenshee the week after we left yours. I could easily
have been spiked by one of the fence posts. [1] Then again, I suppose
I'd have been covered by the NHS.
Not yet. The tuit is just about here, though.
    Indeed. Jammy sods.

[1] Instead, thanks to you two, I turned beautifully and got down
    fine!
