Just back from a jaunt to Bathurst to see the recently extended racing
museum there (at Murray's corner near the pits).

About a third of the space is for bikes and there is some great history on
display - we never seemed to lack gutsy riders or inspired mechanics (aka
"tuners"). The flat platform side cars must have been a tad hairy.

If someone can recommend a good site to put the photos on I will post them
with some notes of whats what.

On a quiet day (not this week, they seemed to be getting ready for this race
thing) you can ride the circuit and be amazed at how narrow it is in the
tricky bits - take it slowly and reverently (plod is often found there).

Also stopped at the Small Arms Factory museum at Lithgow, where we learnt to
make things that go bang, instead of relying on the Poms.

Both worth a visit, as is Bells Line on a quiet sunny day ...

    best, Andrew

    Snip
I've never raced bikes, only cars. But I used to work with Channel 7
directing cameras on Bathurst telecasts in the late 80s. My van was in
BP cutting but they decided the easiest way for me to get up and down
the mountain was to give me a circuit pass for my bike. Cool.

I do remember the first time I came down out of Skyline (with the road
closed so I had no speed limits, I could do what I want) and thinking
"holy ****!". Then coming into the infamous curve on Conrod that
looked wussy until you realise you have come into it waaaaay too hot.
And I was just riding back to the pits. That is one hell of a circuit
the first time you hit it.

First year I was there trying to get down the hill after the race had
finished with crowds of drunken wankers streaming onto the track
trying to get me to give them a lift (on a single seat Ducati what's
    more) was rather interesting too.

    Cheers
    Kev

Nah! Best fun you can have with your clothes on!

OK, never raced at Bathurst, but the Island is sidecar heaven, all
    those left handers.

As long as you time the transition between over behind the rider on
the right and out in front with your bum in the air on the left so
that you don't tumble off the back, then no worries.

I got my L plates, picked my bike up and 1st place to ride was up and around
    the Mount.

And the 1st place I dropped my bike was on that day around the Mount ( at
    the cutting )
