Battery desulfation

Bike's sealed battery is probably on its last legs[1] but I'm too pikey to
go buy a new one atm. Is the desulfation mode on battery
chargers/conditioners (I have the one from Lidl) any use in such cases,
should I be looking at a different type of desulfator or just go buy a new
    battery?

[1] Holds charge OK but drops significantly within less than 10 seconds of
    hitting the starter button[2]
[2] Bike's unwilling to start lately - probably a combination of the weather
and my decision to replace the broken choke cable "some other time".

And the poor starting isn't being helped by a less than good battery either.

Which kind of explains why I got stranded at work last night. Starts fine on
a sunny day, like when I *head* to work.
It's times like this that I miss my old scooter's kickstarter.

New battery it is then. And being connected to an Optimate or similar.

The Optimate has kept my Zed's battery in great condition since I got it in
    2004.
