Would anybody be able to give me a ball-park price range as to how much a
new battery is worth? I'm ringing a couple of places tomorrow and would
like to know what to expect.
The bike is a '88 VFR 700 if that matters.

    Cheers,

When I was pricing batteries for the CBR, I had quotes from $100 to $160 -
and it's not really that big a battery at all!

I think there's a rule of thumb which says always choose the expensive
Japanese battery over the cheaper alternatives. Buying cheap batteries is
    false economy.

About 40-50 bux for a 12-series yacht, double that for a Nipponese Yuasa
    (worth it from experience).

I think you got a pretty good price on that last one! ;-)

I'm currently using a 7Ah gel cell battery in The Jackal (GPX250). It
was one of 10 that I recovered from a dead UPS, that the scrap metal
bloke gave me for free. And they're small enough to carry a spare in
the gearsack for use as a backup, running the mobile phone, etc. ;-)

Does your local Supercheap also charge you $35 for the battery and $12
    for the bottle of acid?
