My battery may go tits-up again, so am contemplating replacing before I have
to walk to work. I now know the reliablility of 'normal' batteries, so was
wondering if gel(?) batteries are better... Hog?

Not gel: you want AGM absorbed glass mat - Hawker Odyssey & Westco are
    the brands I'm familiar with

http://www.odysseyfactory.com/ will give you a cloggie distributor &
    fitment guide.

I fitted an Odyssey to my BMW about 18 months ago. Even when new the OE
battery would partially discharge over winter resulting in the ABS
    failing to intialise.

These AGM batteries are standard fitment on water sports machines and
golf carts so your source may not be a motorcycle dealer.

Golf carts eh... At least he knows that its been tested at speed and it's
not likely to shake itself out of the housing [1]

For a comparison of wet, non-sealed Low Maintenance vs. sealed AGM
batteries, please see Section 7.1 in the Car and Deep Cycle Battery
FAQ on www.batteryfaq.org. If you have a lot vibration, then you
would want to seriously consider the AGM for longer battery service
    life.

    Kindest regards,

    BiLL......

Well the Odyssey battery appears to be bullet proof, if they make one in
    your size.
