My battery in my bike looks like it's on the way out (18 months old -
    12V/10AH GSX-R1000 '01 battery).

Nb/ I was talking to my neighbour yesterday who is a mechanic, he reckons
battery's in cars last about 2 years up here if you are lucky (which is
    about right in my experience).

How long do batteries last down south ?

There are batteries and batteries. The original battery in my
son-in-laws Commodore (genuine Ozzi Battery Mate) lasted 1 year, the
replacement lasted 9 months. The original battery in my wife's Renault
(from la belle France) lasted 7 years, the replacement lasted 18
months. I only wish the car had lasted longer. If you buy the cheapest
battery you can find, it will be. OTOH, if you buy the most expensive,
you might be paying more for the same cheap battery. Get a written
    guarantee.

I sourced a new battery for the van some 5 years ago . cost a little
more than most and was made in Unzed , had a written 3 years warranty ,
    still going strong .

4-6 years in the cars, about 3-5 years in the bikes.
Buying middle of the range stuff. Exide or so for the cars, Yuasa for the
bikes (if I can get them).

    cheers

I asked the missus. She said if I mentioned her vibrator I'd be fucked.

hmm. Very interesting. Life does tend to vary down south based on the
    above factors.

Up here, it's pretty consistent 2 years for me. It would be interesting
hearing from anybody elses experience in the north. I've used a variety of
    brands.. Mostly Yuasa.

nb/ Also another factor is now aggressively the charging system
charges a battery. A few years ago, when I was going a course at the NTU, My
lecturer was the technical head for the NTU solar car project (Solar car challenge
that's held in the NT every year). Talking to this guy, I learnt that
charging and discharging a battery is a BIG complicated science !. Control
is a key factor getting maximum capacity/retention out of a battery and winning
    the race.

it might interest people to learn how quickly their little onboard
clock will drain a battery as well ;).
