The GSXR has lunched its 3rd battery in less than 2 years, Im guessing
that that the cheapo ones I get dont like the winter layoff.

Whats the battery of choice these days that will fair better?

    [old record]

AGM like the Westco or Hawker Odyssey

My Odyssey was fitted in 2004 and sits around for 3-4 months not getting
used most winters. I stuck it on the optimate on the weekend as it was a
bit sluggish getting the ABS pump up to pressure. That's the first time any
charge has gone into it since October when I last rode it. 24 hours it was
fully charged again (it only loses charge because there is an LCD clock).
    AGM batteries rock.

www.tayna.co.uk - weirdly the fitment guide has the GSXR600 under Honda!

If it's a YTX9-BS then this is the one to go for

I put a fairly cheap (for gel battery versions of cheap) in my BMW and
it stood a 3 month layoff amd th ebike started first time. Admittedly
it was never quite as good after the 3 months layoff but it was better
than any other battery I've tried. So the Hawker Odyssey or whatever
    should be much better.

If you're leaving them to go completely flat for months on end (got an
alarm?), that'll kill any battery, cheap or not.
Anything that's attached to a Ctek or similar, especially if it's a
    known name AGM.

  7. No. If it's overcharging, its life will be a damn sight shorter than
three years. And, strictly speaking, it'll be a regulator/rectifier
    issue anyway.

That's the kiddie, Mister Self-Fucker. I put cheap shit batteries in
bikes and then they go flat. A good charge and they're fine - but I
have no truck with steenkin' alarms that pull every last erg out of the
cells. The £17 "E-z Start" YB-12 I put in the Bandit about four years
ago is still functioning well, despite being flat most of its life.

That's because it's in three pieces, obviously.

  10. Put a cheap float charge on it during it's layoff, or make one out of
Maplin bits if you are that way inclined.

I've crow-barred on of the new(-ish) pretty yellow MotoBatt jobbies into
the Hog just a few eeks ago. It seems pretty good for a "cheapie" AGM
style battery. It weighs in similar to that of the OEM fitted that
lasted over 8 years. I doubt this will last that long but it was only
half the price of the original one.

Varta have served me well - the last one had done over 4 years and only got
changed because it was wrongly blamed for sluggish starting when the brushes
    cracked up in the starter.

But then my bike has no current drain with the ignition off and it doesn't
    get a winter layoff.
