Become An Expert with MCN

  1. This week's tech page, the MCN guide to valve operation.

Under the heading: "Become An Expert", after an explanation of pushrods
    and SOHC engines.

"Double overhead camshaft (DOHC) engines are capable of even higher
revs. They have two camshafts, one controlling the tops of the inlet
valves and the other the exhaust valves. There are no rocker arms, which
minimises the reciprocating mass, and instead the cam lobes bear
    directly on shims and buckets..."

Never seen certain GSXR models, then, not to mention oa load of other
    DOHC bikes that use rockers....

I was so hoping when I read that that it would say "...One controlling
the tops of the inlet valves and the other the bottom of the inlet
    valves..."
Can't you for once accept that you've been out-experted?

    :)

I've owned several Fiat Pandas, and most of them had the SOHC engine
with the cams bearing directly on the buckets (the shims being under
the buckets). But it wasn't a particularly high-revving engine; it was
designed like this for other reasons. Does the article go on to
mention what the advantages and disadvantages of a DOHC engine might
    be over a SOHC?

Based on what you quote, it seems a remarkably simplistic article, as
    you suggest.

I read that as genital tap, and winced.

A gental tap, eh? Doesn't take a leap of intuition to see that as a
cure for water on the bollocks.

Too easy to be a valve gear expert these days. No need to be able to
explain a radial Rudge layout or the niceties of Vincent forked rockers.
