When I was a 'white hat' I had to visit an old dear who was complaining
of a strange smell. On visiting her house she told me the problem was
"the smell of death in the wardrobe." I dutifully inspected said item of
furniture and expressed the opinion that all I could detect was the
aroma of moth balls. I never thought to look behind it. What an error I
may have made. I did, however, ask if she could smell it anywhere else.
"Oh, most places, including the shopping centre." I concluded that most
likely she was getting a whiff now and then from the nearby iron
    foundry.

Having said that, our clean up team often had to do a grizzly scrub up
after a corpse had been discovered long after death. This seems a
bizarrely extreme case it has to be said. At least she was missed and
searched for. Eric Bogle's song "the meaning of it all" comes to mind.

It's reasonable to have assumed she was kidnapped. The police will have
    checked behind the sofa.

You forgot to mention that your daughters platoon were blindfolded at
    the time.
