Watched the prog about the building of this lighthouse on Beeb2 last night.
    Bloody interesting stuff.
It seems quite likely that the (mean) physical endurance and tenacity of the
human race is reducing somewhat over time.

It was good - nice to see the masons aren't only evil goits trying to
destroy society, but they design decent lighthouses too.

I think the ability to exploit cheap labour helped immeasurably during
the creation of most major industrial/engineering achievements of the
past. Panama Canal, Hoover Dam, Golden Gate Bridge etc couldn't have
been built if the deaths of hundreds of workers wasn't considered an
    acceptable loss.

I cut myself on a server rack once - does that count? I can still use a
    computer
one-handed though. No hang on, that's for a different reason.

  8. That was decent of him, as the only compensation available to the poor
bastard was the hope that he'd get a job at the end of it.

Those were horrible times to be a working stiff.

Mindyou, I got the impression that Stevenson was a bit uphimself, and
I doubt if he'd have secured the job for Wishart(?) if the injured man
had been a bit of a blasphemer.

Cool site..! It's slightly spooky to see so many places and buildings
I grew up around showing up on such an old map.
