I'm not convinced. Human nature, in the form of politics, often as
simple as grass-roots tribal conflict, is the root of most of the
conflict in the world. Religion is just a handy tool to convert and
control people to fight for one's particular cause.

Precisely. Radical islam has nothing to do with religion and everything
to do with politics. The same goes for fundamentalist christianity,
radical zionism and every extremist ideology since the sun-worshippers
and the moon-worshippers started fighting about whether day was better
    than night.

"I always feel a degree of puzzlement when an educated person
pronounces their belief in something so infantile and preposterous as
religion. Normally they just plummet in my estimations and I begin to
view them as one would view a rather curious child. However, when that
person is in a position of responsibility and by responsibility I mean
anything from having a driving licence and upwards, it concerns me
that their sense of 'responsibility' doesn't end with them."

'Rants like the above aren't just a healthy 'atheist' outlook, but seem to
reveal a deep-seated fear, even terror of religion, the reasons for which
may be buried deep in childhood memories. The result is a hysterical,
    irrational need to dismiss religious people as 'crackpots' or 'idiots';
this paranoia and sense of alienation even becoming as important to the
sufferer as religion is to the religious man.

    I believe that it's treatable'

Back on the old "why waste a bullet?" attitude again I see.

It'd be more effective to just nuke the middle east and go and nick
    oil from somewhere else.

As you can see I've finally mastered this email thing! Sue and John
came to visit today, which was nice, and it was Sue who taught me how
to use the email. I shall be writing to you often now that I have
figured it out. Please send my love to Helen and the boys.
