I've only ever broken one rib, the only bone I've ever broken.
Sneezing with a broken rib isn't much fun.

  3. I've broken the same two ribs no less than 4 times in the last 25
years. Coughing tends to be interesting. I didn't know what I had done
the first time and went scuba diving 4 days later. It was interesting
    getting the wetsuit on.

I think the ribs must be rather weak now as the last time they went
was when a mate grabbed me from behind in a bear hug and lifted me off
the ground and I could feel them crack.

  4. Well I didn't even know they were broken. I just had a pain in my
chest when I coughed. At first I thought it might be pleurisy but 2
days after the diving trips I gave in and went to the doctor.

As I said, I've broken them 4 times now and while it hurts, I've had
shitloads of other things that hurt more. I don't even go to the
doctor or take painkillers after the 2nd time I did it. Painkillers
don't seem to do anything for me. You gotta knock me out.

Try tearing the soft tissue away from your ribcage. Now THAT fucking
hurts. Chronic back pain. THAT fucking hurts.

But we all deal with pain differently I guess.

  5. And he's a little bugger too. Strong though. He spent the next weekend
with me and some mates on Bruny Island for a bucks night. He looked
particularly nervous figuring I might try and seek revenge :)
    You can never hide.
Ta. Coopers Pale please, and make it snappy.

Pulling your gloves back on over your broken fingers stings a bit, too.

  7. Bastards talking about me behind my back!

5 ribs(left 2-6), a pneumothorax, tear to the spleen and liver. They
let me out today after 7 days in Nepean District Hospital, some time
    in intensive care.

The ribs are uncomfortable, the gut is sore but not really painful.
The dent left in my left lung by my wallet hurts a bit when I cough,
laugh etc. But I think I came away from the injuries OK. The main
pain issue was the impact stirred up an old back injury making it
    difficult to sleep at night.

Now I just have to look after myself and do nothing that puts any
pressure on my lower abdomen. So really sit around and do as little
as possible if I want to keep getting better. I will not be riding
until the docs give the all clear on my injuries.

Finally got to look at the bike today, it's not good either. I'll
give it a clean tomorrow to check it better then ring the bikeshop to
come and pick it up for assessment/repairs or whatever, that's what
    insurance is for after all.

It's OK; no-one said anything NICE about you!
**** ME; that's a punctured-lung as well as the spleen and liver damage.
(Thank Huey you're not a liver ethanol-abuser like most of us here are!)
I doubt it'll be your concern any more Al.

I reckon the same Clem, there are a lot of broken/bent or scratched
bits, the major ones already include: front wheel (bent), forks(bent),
    tank(scratched), header pipes(bent), muffler(bent). Doesn't bother
me, I just get another one to replace it if that's the case, that's
what insurance is for after all.

First night at home, the most difficult thing was to try and find a
position that I can sleep in. Our bed is too soft and allows the ribs
to move too much, after lots of experimentation I ended up sitting in
the spare bedroom on a foam mattress protector with a pile of doonas/
pillows stacked against a wall etc to support me in a semi sitting
position. It was comfortable, stable, caused me no pain and I can get
    up from that position.

In the hospital they told me a bruised lung, I don't think it was
major. The report I had for my doc said pneumothorax. I just knew I
was bringing up some blood if I coughed.

    Could have been much worse.
Just after Clem posted the initial message I saw this story on TV.

    Motorcyclist killed at Bundaberg
    Updated: 08:47, Friday December 10, 2010
A man has died in a motorbike accident in southeast Queensland.

Police said the 63-year-old was riding the motorbike along Quay St,
Bundaberg, on Thursday when he failed to negotiate a bend and hit a
    guardrail.

In the initial news bite they said he died but not when or where, and I
thought for a second..... This bloke never made it to the hospital.

  15. Believe me the thought has crossed my mind Theo. Marie has been good
at covering it, but it has hit her fairly hard what could have
happened, she's been quite emotional. If she wanted me to toss it in
I would, but she's as much a rider as I am and very unlikely to
    happen.

A conversation with the group of marauding docs before leaving the
ward: " Oh you're that patient that's been riding most of his life
that's had a rethink and isn't going to ride anymore".
Me: "I have been riding most of my life, but you must have another
patient in mind" , which actually brought a smile to the face of one
    of the younger doctors.

Bent forks (damage to a major suspension component) is an automatic
"repairable write-off" in Qld. You don't have the written-off-vehicle
register (scam) in NSW as far as I'm aware but I'd expect the above list
would well and truly be a write-off.

    Hey Al,

The fact that you're reading ausmoto means one of two things:
    (1) You're on the mend, or
    (2) You're really sick

    <evil grin>

Glad you're well enough to be enough of a sicko to be reading/posting ;-)

Take care, be nice to yourself, heal well!
