Bent shift shaft - XR100

My buddies sons xr100 took a pretty hard t-bone early this summer and
bent his shifting shaft. He got it bent back to where it was ridable but

would slip out of second gear. The shaft was so bent that it wouldn't
even come out of the cases. We cut it off flush to the case and then it
slid out. Before we go any further on this I wanted to ask. Would the
bent shaft, itself, cause the bike to be slipping out of second gear?
Should there be any reason to split the cases? Our thinking was if
something is broken or bent (shifting fork?) inside he would have heard
or felt a vibration while riding.

    Thanks

A bent fork won't necessarily make anything vibrate. It'll
just cause missed shifts, slipping out of gear, etc. It's probably
    worth having a look.

Bent shifting fork is my bet, that is if I was a gambling man :)
