    My this thread is full of bait.

    Some amateur anglo saxon scholars are probably going to skip it
    despite the Gaiman connection.

    I was most unimpressed by them giving it a happy ending.
    Oh for the lost Danes/Pfeiffer massage scene.

    Leaving aside the whole graphic novel issue...

    He also produces novels, screenplays and some rather excellent short
    stories. His kids books are brilliant as well. After reading Coraline,
    not that many years ago, eldest slept with his light on. Mr Gaiman
    does dark and disturbing very well.

    In the short story arena something about this one reminded me of
    you...

    And I bet if you read Good Omens (joint authored with Pratchett) you'd
    really enjoy it.

    "led" - it's only "lead" when you're plumbing. But you're right about the
    suitable reading matter thing: I peruse the occasional graphic novel.

    Merely another means of telling a story. Books, covers, judging?

    I will confess to rather enjoying his effort with Pratchett, Good Omens.

    When I was 13.

    Long literary tradition of scaring the little darlings. The world
    isn't nice and fluffy.
    So you'd rather read sweet and lovely stuff with happy endings?

  13. It isn't all entirely dark either. *Some* parts of it are 'nice and
    fluffy'.
    <Serious question>

    What's wrong with happy endings?Do you not believe they are possible?

    Well yes, but sending a child out into the world believing everything
    is rosy and nothing bad happens isn't a good idea.
    <not so serious answer>

    Everything ends in death...

  15. I'm struggling to think of how any child that's been to school could
    think this.

    Balance is good. Especially on tightropes.
    Nice diversion. Now back to the original question..
