Could someone please tell me what would be the best moped for a first
    time rider under say $2,000.

And the reason I am getting a moped and not a motorbike is I won't
riding all the time and I cannot really afford a motorbike.

    Thanks

    Well, firstly, define moped?

There are only a few states in Oz that actually have a legal concept of
    a moped, Q'land, S.A., and possibly W.A.

They tend to consider an automatic scooter of upto 50 cc as a "moped",
and have special deals on their licencing rules.

In NSW and Vic, a small motorcycle is just that....a small motorcycle.

In the purest terms, I'd be surprised if you could even find a real
moped, as in pedal assisted/started motorcycle, in Oz apart from
    collections of weird stuff.

Perhaps you mean the pushbikes fitted with motor assist, which, while
they don't actually need a licence, cost an amazing amount of money. :-(

Have a look at http://www.scootoz.com.au/ anyway.

  5. Perhaps you mean the pushbikes fitted with motor assist, which, while
I have one of those that I'll sell you. Won't charge you $2000 for it
    either.

As for a moped being cheaper than a bike, if, by moped, you mean scooter,
then you are seriously kidding yourself. An older bike is a _lot_ cheaper
than an older scooter, and seeing as you are looking sub $2K (possibly
including safety gear) then you will definately be looking older.

They are fantastic value. Pay about $800-$1000 for a good one and when
you're fininshed with it sell it on for near on the same price. It cost $4
to fill the tank, so you'll go along way to beat that for cheap transport.

Heard on ABC radio Melbourne Jon Faine's program this morning that
there's a push from Victoria Police to have those mini "pocket bikes"
become registered vehicles, which then requires a licence to ride. It's
come about as they're really popular with parents buying them for their
kids. Police are concerned that kids are riding them on the roads at up
    to 60 km/h.

    Then there's this article:

    http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,11111372%5E2862,00.html

While this article talks about being illegal to ride on the road and can
do 20 km/h, listening to Bob Hastings, head traffic cop on the ABC, the
two news items seem to contradict each other.

I'd be in favour of that. There's a dickhead round my way, who has
darted out between two cars on one of them, straight in front of me. I
should have collected the bugger, then he wouldn't have been able to do
it again a couple of days later.

    Cheers

  11. Thanks for people comment I have seen brand new mopeds/scooters (for
    you crazy) for around $2,000.

Then can you please tell where I can buy a older bike rather then a
    older scooter?

But then again I think I go for postie bike maybe at Government
auctions and I know motoring groups check cars for you too see if
there are road worthy does anyone know of anyone that would check
    motorbikes?
