Don't bother. If you want HD, get an HD box off eBay and stick to the
    BBC and Channel4 broadcasts.
Sky HD isn't worth the ukp10/month unless you're into live sports, IMO.

  2. Or movies (we upgraded to HD just before Christmas) and have got a few
HD films from the pay-as-you-go Sky movies HD channel.

But watching NFL on HD is a vast improvement - if only for the fact
that the US graphics no longer take up huge amounts of screen space..

To a point. You'll need to contact Sky to get them to pair up your new
HD box with your existing Sky card.
No, it isn't. I don't think the Beeb's MotoGP coverage is HD either.
Apart from Sky subscription channels, just the Beeb and Channel4 at the
moment. ITV-HD will be coming soon, I think.

The beeb's motogp coverage isn't even widescreen.

  5. From memory there are about 16 HD channels available (BBC HD being one
    of the better ones).

True, but I've lived with this for a number of years and don't find it a
problem. As I wanted the best picture quality, I use RGB where possible,
and all the video inputs on the amp are empty. But, with a programmable
remote control, I can set up macros to switch across to various settings.

    Glad you're sorted.

The MotoGP and WSB feeds are not even available in widescreen! Something
I quite like with ITV's coverage of BSB.

    Oh bollocks. I've ginged.

It's not the beeb's fault though. It's down to the world feed.

Yeah, but the BBC do something weird to it that prevents my tele
stretching it to fit the widescreen whereas Eurosport don't.

They vertically letterbox it, so to speak, saving your TV the trouble of
    doing it.

Stretching it to fit the widescreen only works if you're happy either
losing the top and bottom of the picture, or are a bit fan of the "hall
    of mirrors" look.

  12. Generally they are taking a feed from whichever national TV company is
covering the race - and those generally are standard format.

Of course that doesn't explain why the talking-head segments and the UK
    coverage isn't widescreen.

Apparently, yes. I've never done it though.
Same as BBC HD then. The Beeb started HD just before the World Cup in
June 2006 and is still not broadcasting a full channel line-up. Once
you've seen a period drama or two and many repeats of Later with Jools
Holland and Planet Earth, you've pretty much done the lot.
    Yes, that would be good.

Oh, they're free are they? I thought they were part of one of the Sky
    'mixes' that I pay for.

  16. Part of the basic package (as far as I know!). It's one of the 'mixes'
and when you select one of them you seem to get them all. And they are
all covered by the basic subscription.

Assuming you've still got the same Shuttle unit as you had originally,
there's a utility that lets you tweak the display settings to get a
better picture when you're using it as a PC.

Not that it makes any difference to you now, of course.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten they do that, coz I watch the Eurosport show.
Always made me laugh when widescreen TVs started getting main stream, and
friends and family would have a 4:3 picture filling the screen giving fat
faces. "But it's a waste otherwise" was often the response.

I actually do zoom the picture when I watch the racing on Eurosport 2. I
set it to trim the top and bottom, so I get rid of the ticker tape on the
bottom, and never lose any of the action.
