I don't mind the stretched thing (hall of mirrors as you call it) for
sport, because the action tends to be in the centre of the screen and
that's unaffected on my tele. I prefer it over vertical letterbox
anyway. If I wanted that I'd tell my tv to do it, I don't like being
forced into it by the broadcaster.

Oh, OK then. I thought it was something new, as it was in the 'Gadgets
    for 2008' list.

Except most TVs, recognising that it's a widescreen feed, won't let
you selectt 16:9 zoom on it, so the only way of doing so is to
manually change the screen size, which is a) a right PITA and b)
another right PITA when you have to change it back again for any
    proper widescreen stuff.

    The bastards.

Try as I might, I can't get upset about a 4:3 picture being shown in a
    4:3 box.

You're showing unusual restraint then. Normally you'll gladly go off
on a rant about much less irritating things.

agreed. I especially can't stand anamorphic widescreen - makes it look
as if the screen is curved each side.

I frequently find it hard to care about things technical.

    Punctuation, otoh...

  10. Welcome to my vision when I switch from contacts to glasses.. Which is
why I didn't used to ride bikes just after (depth and width perception
both take about half an hour to reprogram).

Anamorphic widescreen is where the 16:9 image is squeezed horizontally to
make a 4:3 image on the DVD or for transmission, which is then unsqueezed
when being viewed to give the correct aspect ratio. Any half decent TV
will apply the unsqueezing equally across the horizontal access. If
you're getting greater stretching at the side of your images, then get a
    less pikey TV.

On my TV, only in "zoom" mode will it make the edges wider to fill the
screen, and leave the central part unaffected. Which I agree, looks
    rubbish.

Can you buy them other than using ebay? I don't do ebay, and my sky+
box has started randomly changing to eurosport twice a day on it's own.

I don't think you are. S-video effectively splits composite into two
separate channels for chroma and luma. It does give a greatly improved
colour performance but not up to RGB standard.

....I was talking about zooming a 4:3 image up to 16:9 - it looks
particularly mad when there's a scrolling ticker at the bottom of the
    screen.

Exactly! The *only* time I use this is to watch Eurosport 2, where I zoom
the picture and then expand it so the top and bottom are cropped, which
hides the ticker from the bottom. With the racing coverage, it's nearly
all central anyway, so doesn't look so bad.
