Best Sat Nav for bike and truck.....?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Chris N Deuchar, Nov 23, 2007.

  1. Been away a while, see the usual suspects still around but I have a
variation on the usual 'Best Sat Nav for bike & car' FOAK query.

Rumour has it there are special trucker[2] versions which keep you
    away from low bridges etc.

    All comments[1] gratefully received

(Of course I expect this to turn out to be a gingerish request but I
just didn't have time to read all the 66k posts since I last
regularly looked in so, if it is, please point me at relevant past
    threads)

    Hello stranger.

Most of the time it is operator fuckwittery. I have a Garmin 2610 for use
on the bike. In the preferences you can select your vehicle type.

I've just tried a route (using the acompanying PC software not the actual
GPS unit) using bike & truck settings for a route to Hay on Wye from
    Llanfihangel Crucorney.

By bike the recommended route goes past Llanthony Priory which would mean
going under a low railway bridge and a very narrow gorge.

By truck, the software recommends a different route, avoiding the bridge
    and the gorge.

Gyp is the one to ask about GPS units. He seems to be operating some sort
of consumer trial. The ageing 2610 suits my purpose but I'd want something
with a postcode search facility for a professional driving job.

Zumo 550. It has vehicle and bike mounts included.
You should haven't killed all 66K posts then.

I have a perfectly good GO so it's hard to justify a squillion pounds on
another satnav <stern look at Gyp>

What is this "justify" of which you speak?

You want it? You can afford it?

    Buy it.

    Sorted.

    Ah! That would explain it.

And the funny squeaking noise when you walk.

    I've often wondered about that.

Based on recent posts, most of which you may have missed due to the
telephony cutbacks, he won't be buying a Zumo unless it is available in
    Lidl.

Yes. They sent a replacement mount. It was supposed to be new and
improved - it looked like the old one to me.

No, but the little security screw fell out, which is a good thing
actually 'cos it tightened itself with the vibrations of the bike and
then you hard to fart about with the wee screwdriver thing,
pain in the arse. I may find a replacement screw for it, but It's a lot
more secure than my TomTom Rider POS[1].

[1] Terrible mount and the contacts are fucked so it doesn't charge
anymore. Although TBF when it works, it works quite well and is a *lot*
faster in updating the screen, the Zumo is s l o w.

Actually the squeak is the expensive and complicated GTR1400 shaft drive
system getting ready to give up the ghost. I expect.
