Best UK Roads.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by toad_oftoadhall, Aug 1, 2005.

  1. I'm trying to come up with a decent list of UK roads.

UKRM have probably ridden as many roads as most so can the FOAK offer
some road suggestions [1] for the best roads in Wales, SW England, SE
England, Southern Central England & the Midlands. (I'm not interested
in the North 'cos by the time I've ridden past the Midlands I might as
well just ride the other way and be in France...) A comment on what
makes them good and which 'bit' is good would be useful too!!!

If only Michelin did a 1:200000 map of the UK without half the roads
    missing.

    I'll kick off with:

A466 Chepstow -> Monmouth. Great twisties, great scenery.

    Thanks in advance.

    [1] B, A and U. I'm not predudiced.

I'll kick off with not posting my favoured roads on Usenet.

With this fact alone there is no point in posting as you will have missed
the best and clearest roads in Britain.

  5. I agree. But the Ardennes are three hours away from me. The Alps are
nearer than Scotland. So until I'm bored with
France/Switzerland/Luxembourg/Italy I will mostly not be going more
than a few hours North, no matter how great the roads are. ...but I
fully take your point. Also good English roads are less obvious from
the Map. In mountain terrain you can clearly see which roads are likely
to be good. Not so easy with a roadmap of Kent.

  7. So you see why I'm asking... I'm up that way this weekend so I'll give
    the B4293 this weekend.
No sweat. Drop me an E-mail with some suggestions. There are only two
of us likely to use any recommended roads and if you're in Wales only 6
    weekends a year tops.

Agreed, some of mine here in north Wales have already featured in RiDE
and Bike hence they now are heavily policed by Brunstroms boys ....

    [snip my question]

Tony posts shite and gets 88 reponses (and counting). I ask a *fairly*
reasonable question and not a single road suggestion. From now on I
aint posting anything unless it's got a car numberplate as a title.
    :)

    You all ride safely, now.

  10. Windy used to collate them in the FAQ. Don't know if the current
    caretaker maintains the list.

Following up on what others have posted, why not twist this into a list
of really *bad* roads - the ones to avoid. Now that might be more
useful, if a little more lengthy.

Well, your obvious pro-Frog and anti-Northern bias could alienate
quite a few of us up here, although it should ingratiate you quite
happily with certain others to the South. Within an hour's ride, I
have the Lake District, the North Pennines, and Southern Scotland, all
chock full of fantastic roads; twice that meagre distance sees even
more. I don't have to pay for a ferry or the Channel Tunnel, and
(with the possible exception of certain parts of S.W. Scotland) no
language issues - plus I can buy petrol on a Sunday. You should try
    it, we don't bite...

There's no comparison between riding in the UK and on the continent. I
even find riding the dead-straight Roman roads in France to be strangely
    appealing.

And mesmerising, like the narrow avenue of trees which were trying to
seduce me into seeing if I could brush them with my panniers without
    falling off.
