Hi all Gotta make my way up to Sydney from Canberra for a couple of weeks work. It's the first time I've done it on motorbike and I've got all day Sunday to do it in. What are some decent routes you can suggest ( I definitely don't want to spend more time on the Hume than necessary). I was thinking of heading out towards Bateman's Bay, over Clyde Mountain, then up the coast from there...I don't know the good roads however, so if you could fill me in that would be great. Thanks DG
DG is of the opinion: That's my choice if you've got to do it in a time budget. Most of the Princes Hwy isn't too bad as long as it's not clogged with traffic, so just roll along and enjoy it. If you've really* got all day, then head to Bombala via Cooma (sleep on the run along the Monaro) and Nimmitabel, then take the road to Pambula, but turn off just past Wyndham to Candelo, through Candelo to the highway, then through Bega, but turn right in the middle of town and head out to Tathra, up to Bermagui (they've sealed the whole road from Tathra to Bermagui now, and it's brilliant), then onto the highway, and take it all the way up to Sydney. Detours from the Princes Hwy that may be of interest include: * just north of where you'll hit the highway if you go to Bermagui you can turn off for Tilba Tilba. It's only about a 3km long stretch, but it's got several nice little tight turns with good sight distance you can really rip through. * Take the turnoff for Jamberoo just after the Kiama bends, and head through Jamberoo to Albion Park. If you want to you can take a left at the main intersection in Albion Park and go up the Macquarie Pass, stop off at Robertson for pies, and head to Moss Vale and up to Sydney via the old highway via all the little villages that don't see anyone any more. Most of the old highway isn't great twisties, but it's a nice quiet, calm bush drive, with bugger all traffic. - Matt
Thanks Matt I think the Cooma/Bombala tour adds a bit too much distance for me, so I've decided on this route. Canberra --> Batemans Bay via Kings Hwy, over Clyde Mountain Up the Princes Hwy to Kiama From Kiama to Moss Vale via the Maquarie Pass Up the old Hume (is that hwy 89?) to Picton From there, I need to get across, as Im going to Sutherland/Cronulla area. So I was thinking of cutting back, through Appin and down to Bulli and up through a bunch of small towns to Waterfall, through Heathcote Nat Park to Sutherland How does that route sound? Enough twisties in there to keep me from dying of boredom on the highways? Thanks DG
DG is of the opinion: Not sure what the number is, but that's the one. Not bad at all. If you've got a bit more time, you can enjoy the run to Camden before looping back via perhaps Menangle Rd to Picton Rd. - Matt
I've ridden from Cann River to Bombala, Wyndham, Pambula, Merimbula, breakfast in Tathra, Bega, Cooma via Brown Mountain, then slept up the Monaro Hwy and been at the Cotter pub in time for lunch. Nev.. I wonder if my steak is cooked yet. '03 ZX12R
