    I think I see a few too many people admiring it actually. I'm wondering how
    many idle hands it gets parked there. I saw numerous sets of people stop and
    look at it, some people even taking photos on their phone. ???

    Oct 2003, I was also the guy that parked the green 2000 ZX6R there, and the
    black '98 ZX6R, and the Maroon '96 ZX6R.
    There's a yellow 998? nope ... no idea.

    They'll sort you out and they are very cheap. They won't rip you off. You'll
    be amazed at how good it will feel after a good service. By all means do it
    yourself, but remember you'll need feeler guages, a torque wrench and a
    micrometer at the very least, plus the rest of the tools etc. Or are the VTR
    screw type adjustment? Big??

    Yep, screw and locknuts on the Spada so you won't need the mic... No
    real need for a torque wrench either, the most important fasteners you
    get to really are the rocker cover bolts... Its not like you're torquing
    up crankshaft nuts or big end bolts...

    Nope, is it customary?

    There's no mention of doing it in either the Spada or the Monster
    service manuals...

    (wondering if he's being trolled or if maybe theres some reason why
    you'd need do this on motors with pushrod driven valve rockers?)

    Not for screw and locknut, it is for shim. Which the spada ain't got...

    I'm trying to work out which bits of the valvegear in an overhead cam
    motor (either shim or screw & locknut) would be affected in any way by
    the head bolt torque... Like I said, _maybe_ I can see how a pushrod
    motor might allow the clearances to change when the head gets torqued
    (but even there I'd be quite surprised of theres enough "play" in the
    head <-> headgasket <-> cylinder block <-> crankcase to make any
    difference to the couple of thou tolerance that the valve clearances
    have - can you _really_ compress all of that by a thou or two just by
    tightening the head bolts?)

    And, to further muddy the water, I last checked the valve clearances on
    the Monster while the heads were sitting on the work bench - the head
    bolts were not only not torqued to spec, they weren't even fitted...
    Should I re-check them? (the answer to that is "yes" anyway, since that
    was almost 10,000km ago anyway)

    Yeh biggy, same here. moike, please explain ;)
    If the cam is mounted in the head - would not matter one iota if
    heads tensioned before or after shims done.

    The only thing that comes to mind is if the motor has a gear driven
    cam drive - then i belive if the head is removed - the head gasket has
    to be set up so the clearance for the gear drive is maintained.

    If the head flexes a bit when you tighten it down, then
    it's gonna make a poofteenth of an inch of difference
    somewhere and you'll need to re-do the shims.

    Seemed obvious to me.

    You could be correct GB, but as i see it - camshaft bolted to head -
    head bolted to barrel - if you tension the head - it alters the
    clearance between the head and barrel (maybe only as you said a
    poofteenth of a inch) but the camshaft will stay the same distance
    from shim bucket.

    Well.. when I did the shims on the Kwak, I removed the cams, and I'm
    fairly certain I had to retorque something...

    But it was long ago and far away and the bike is dead.
