  3. If you've done nothing wrong then you've nothing to hide etc. It's the
human cockups - ie entering data into databases is where all the **** ups
    come from

    CT fumbled, fiddled and fingered:
Using that as a guiding principle I guess we will see them in our homes
    too shortly ;)

Another thing that won't make a difference to minor crims that would
swap their plates while shifting masses of drugs around, but will help
track down the real criminals such as the old dear that's forgotten to
    tax her car.

For a moment, I thought that was supposed to be a cross-channel ferry,
implying that you were leaving the country.

That's a great subject for "doing a TOG" with a discussion about ID
cards. There's usually someone who can't wait to keep tabs on all the
johnny foreigners. Just ask them "if you've nothing to hide, why not
have a government controlled camera in your house, in case someone
breaks in - you've nothing to hide, after all."

And then step away and watch from afar.

  12. Interesting set of responses. No one seemed to suspect what I suspect, and
that is that whilst they're claiming that these measures will help to track
criminals, they're also going to be able to use them to track ordinary,
'law-abiding' [1] citizens. The Miners' Strike showed how governments obey
laws only when it suits them.

    [1] whatever that is ..

But almost everywhere anyone goes they can be 'tracked' already.

What surprises me is the amount of people who think conspiracies exist
everywhere and that someone is remotely interested in what they are
doing. Where does the manpower for the analysis of 'tracking people'
come from? And what do they do with the information? Who watches the
    watchers?

Whilst I'd agree that the system could potentially be used that way,
it's so unlikely that I'd suggest it can be discounted for a long time
to come. I'd guess that the only people who might get 'tracked' on any
kind of regular basis are those people who have something to hide
anyway, there simply isn't the resources anywhere to follow everyone all
the time. And what could they do with the information?

You were seen riding/driving down any road, anytime in a northerly
direction. So what? Of what good is that to the authorities? It might
even be a positive thing in that it might help to eliminate you from
enquiries or provide an alibi for a crime, surely they are 'good'
    things?

OTOH, it could also positively put you in the vicinity of a crime scene
    too ... ;)
