Todays big cheer for taking defeat so well goes to:

Canada for putting in a complaint after the British girl won gold in
the womens skeleton event, apparently they claimed her helmet gave her
an unfair aerodynamic advantage. Well having watched it a couple of
times I'm convinced that the reason the Canadian girl finished out of
the medals was because she fucked up.

I wonder if Marc Donovan was on the committee that decided to put the
    complaint in?

  2. The Canadians took the bad-mouthing from the British press quite
badly. It was all over the news here this week. They're obsessed with
    winning everything.

Also, I'm glad we had better snow in Banff than in Vancouver...

I didn't realise the press over here had been having a pop at the
Canadians, apart from constantly pointing out that this was the 3rd
time there'd been an Olympic games held in Canada and they'd never won
a gold medal on home soil. I suppose that would make them get a bit
    sensitive though.
You're lucky they didn't ship it all out to Vancouver.

AFAIC if somebody going headfirst down an icy hill wants to go a bit
faster, then good luck to 'em.

Absolutely. I'd love to have a try on one of those beasts but doing a
couple of runs on a luge is as close as I've ever been.

The yanks and five other teams put in a complaint before she even
started, but it was rejected by the authorities.
Her last run was awful. Though nowhere near on a par with that chap in
    the Super G.

That's just our 'special relationship' with the colonials coming to
the front. The others would have joined in because they were worried
they might be the next to be annexed.
    At least nobody died.

If I thought enough Cannucks subscribed to reeky I'd have been tempted
to use the x-post card but it's not worth the effort.

  9. On what grounds? The only photos I've found of her in action show
nothing exceptional (about her helmet, I mean!).

Her helmet has a row of small ridges on it -

    URL:http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic_games/vancouver_2010/skeleton/8520464.stm

"The US had claimed ridges on Williams' helmet gave her an illegal
aerodynamic advantage. International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing
Federation (FIBT) jury president Wolfgang Strauss said the helmet's
manufacturer confirmed the ridges, or spoilers, "are an integral part
    of the helmet".

  11. And as she (Williams) said - all helmets were inspected prior to
qualifying. Hers passed the scrutes, so she wasn't worried about the
    legality of it.

  13. OK, thanks. From what I can see in the photos, the claim is
laughable. After all, it's not like a winged keel...

They'll all be trying them out as soon as they get home and if they
don't improve they'll pretend they didn't try them and go back to
    complaining.

  15. Frankly, with the size of her conk, I'm surprised she needed anything in
the way of aerodynamic aids anyway.
I spotted the lassie's parents this morning; poor girl didn't stand a
chance and I'll bet the family name was Schnozzle before they changed it
    by deed poll.
