bike shops in sydney?

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Shaun Van Poecke, Aug 7, 2007.

  1. Hi All,
Any reccomendations for bike shops in Sydney?

Or better yet, for 3 bike shops.

    The bike is a 91 Honda CBR1000F

One for the cheapest prices on genuine Honda and some aftermarket parts?

One for reasonable prices and decent service on jobs I'd rather not do
myself (valve adjustments, cam chain replacements etc) and maybe even the
odd oil change if the price is right

    One for tyres.

Any experiences with shops, good or bad?

    no idea.
MMT in Granville have always done right by me, and they don't blink at
older bikes. Even ones much older than '91! (but other shops may,
Sydney is a new bike town)
Chivo's in Granville if you don't mind pulling your own wheels. Skidz
    in Croydon.

The guy at Skidz was very pleasant but charged me $70 to fit two tyres
I'd just bought off him... I'd consider that quite expensive
(Northside used to charge $40 I assume they still do).

Been going to Locke's Motorcycle Tyre Service in Townsville for 24 years
now. Fits tyres and static balances for free, removes any corrosion from
wheels while he's at it, always good service, always a flawless job.
Hugh Ryan Drive, (don't say it quickly) Garbutt, Townsville.

Ummm by the time I got back from Townsvile I'd have to turn around and
go back for another set of tyres..

(2500 each way, OK, so I'd have maybe 1000Km left on a set)

  12. I gave skidz a call today, the story is that if you pull your own wheels and
take them in, fitting is free. If they have to remove the wheels themselves,
its $35/wheel. I suppose thats not particularly a bad price if you justify
it on the basis of $70/hour for shop time. my shop charges out $80/hour
(engineering) and when you think about it, it would take you more than an
hour to hock up your bike, get out tools, pull both rims, drive to the bike
shop, drop off, come back later pick them up and put them back on. It can
    make tyres a more expensive proposition though. Prices i got were;

    Metzeler Z6 rear 180/55 17 fitted $330
    Metzeler Z6 front 120/70 17 fitted $260

total price comes up to $590. $520 if i pull the wheels off myself. At
that rate, if i get 10,000kms out of the tyres they cost me $5.90/100kms.
pretty close to the cost of fuel!

I decided to be a tightarse and bought a pair of Shinko tyres for my
bike a couple of months ago, total cost $260 fitted on loose wheels..
No better or worse gripwise than any other set of sports touring
compound tyres I've tried. I doubt I'll go back to paying double for
the "brand name" tyres. $70 an hour labour rate is fine, but replacing
a set of tyres is only a 20 minute job for an experienced fitter.

I used to get Shinko tyres all the time, but at some point they seemed
to be sized wrongly. The "correct" size for my bike was too large.
Guzzis are very sensitive to tyre size, so the bike felt wrong, BT45s
    were much better.
