    morning everyone,

Can anyone recommend a decent bike shop in Watford or Burnt Oak area for the
potential purchase of crash helmet, clothing, ground anchor, chain and lock
    etc ?
In fact, any you could recommend in Luton, Bedford, Stevenage would be handy
    as well.

Also, is a 'large' in one brand of helmet the same as a 'large' in any other
brand or does it vary wildly from one manufacturer to another ?

    thanks in advance

    rich.

For that kind of stuff, I would use Hein Gericke.

The closest one to Burnt Oak is in Kenton. Don't know about Luton etc.
but Lozzo or Bonwick will be along shortly, no doubt.
The latter I would think. Go and try all sorts of makes and sizes
before finding the one that best suits your head shape, which is as
important for comfort as size is for safety.

  3. Measure round yer bonce just above the monobrow.

If its anywhere around or above 64cm then you'll have Mr Potato Head
    problems like I did.

I ended up with the Shoei XR-1000 in XXXL, but it only comes in Gloss Black.

    @news.individual.net:

The size is merely a guide to the helmet you will try on first. Even within
the same brand a "large" may vary in shape from model to model.

for Luton I'd go to Hein Gericke. nothing really in Bedford, we either
go to HG in Luton or Northampton.

The old Colin Collins shop in Letchworth used to be ok but haven't
been in since the change of ownership.

Heard good things about Bike stop in Stevenage but never been there.

    I'd agree with this.
    Nor have I
It's full of Dainese stuff, so I'd avoid it unless you want to be
ripped off for inferior quality highly priced rubbish.

Why would any other 'colour' be required?

Bought an absolutely appallingly fitted shoei at Bike Stop in about
2001. Was definitely not cheap but did not trust my own instinct -
the bod working there convinced me it had to be very tight to
function, overriding my concerns. Well it was tight, after a short
ride leaving a red patch on my forehead. Have a Zeus flip lid which
apart from being extremely noisy is a wonderful fit. Was very cheap
as well - it needs replacing as it is getting very scratched and has
had a few slight bounces in its time.

I have since been back to Bike Stop though - bought some heated grips
from there a few months back, much impressed with the service received
    this time round.

    Lloyd Coopers, Queens Road, Watford?

Don't know about the clothing, but they definitely do lids.

Otherwise, as others have said, Heinz Gerkin.

Or if you can get a bit further into London, Infinity have a branch at
    Hanger Lane Gyratory.

Cheers Chris, ended up in Hein Gericke, Kenton later this afternoon and it
seems like a good place but unfortunately a burst water main caused traffic
chaos in the area and by the time I got there in the cage I only had time
for a few essentials. Might try the one in Luton for a new lid next week.

Thanks Darsy, and everyone for the replies.

Heinz Gerkin seem like a good bet for a lid purchase, I will probably be
working in Luton next week so will give them a go. The choice of lids on the
internet is immense but I really want to try before I buy.

How about the BMF rally, is that a good option to find a new crash helmet
    perhaps ?

Of course, but matt / gloss is more of a matter of personal taste, IMHO.
While gloss black may not appear to be quite as black as should be, it
can, at least, be cleaned more effectively IME, thus preserving the
    essential blackness at all times.
