    <nitpick>
The 1960 250 law would not have applied to me because my provisional
was issued in early (Jan-ish) 1960. Provisionals issued after mid-1960
should have had the 250 limit (unless with a sidecar) printed on them
    as a condition.

Anyways - the phrase "when I were a lad" does not necessarily imply
    age 16+.

  3. No, I've corrected myself. You could indeed ride a bike bigger than a
250 on L plates as long as it had a sidecar attached.

So why did you say that you had to wait until you were 17 to be able
    to ride any bike?

Now I see what you are getting at.
The moped at 16 bit is wrong, that came in later, upto 1960 you could ride
anything at 16. Blame my memory and the fact that at the time a 16 year
old almost always saved up cash from a paper round and scraped up
enough cash to get on the road with a tatty old moped. Very few could
afford a decent bike until they got a proper job and saved for a year or
more. The 250 cc learner limit which started in 1960 did not really
affect youngsters unless they had plenty of money which was rather rare
in those days. By the late 60s and early 70s there was more money around.
I was lucky enough to be given a castoff scrap Bantam which I fixed up
before I got to 16. The envy of the other kids in the street <B-).

Got the impression from something I read/heard once many years ago. My
assumption is you can apply greater pressure faster/easier/less pain
    with shoes.

My FS1E: SPF 170R. It was quick - for a blue one.

Hmmmm - James May did a good job of demolishing the FS1E speed fantasies
    recently on Top Gear.
    They were pretty though.

Oh, I admit wholeheartedly that they were only "quick" by a 16 year
old's standards. That and the fact that most of my peers had new but
restricted models which the Fizzy would piss all over.

It would get an indicated 50+ on the two mile stretch of the A31
between Four Marks and Chawton, which is downhill all the way. On the
flat it was just about OK. Also, it wasn't the best example and was
about four years old or so.
Mine was like this, 'cept in blue[1]

[1] I gave up googling for a picture of an actual blue one.

they were quick when compared with the later restricted 50s.

I tried driving the car once with my MX boots on.

    That was fun.

    That may be so...
....but I saw that and it's not got the speedblock tank, which was what
    I was actually looking for.
