I was enquiring about one as an aid to reducing my premium through
Carol Nash. Apparently, the way Tracker[1] works is to detect if the
vehicle moves from it's current location without being driven. It
then immediately causes an alarm whereby the company contact you on
one of several numbers. It only has to move by a few feet I'm told.

Any use? Who knows. Anyone ever caught a thief with one?

Apparently this one can detect bikes even if they're hidden in closed
locations, so this shouldn't be the case.

It'll be done by triangulation, I suppose, so you shouldn't need the
    bike to move at all.

ISWYM but the system is *activated* the moment a thief moves the bike
without the engine running. That way you get more chance for the pol
to have a road chase and kill someone. Other trackers (AFAIK) need
you to spot the bike is missing [1] then call them to see where it has
gone to, by which time it's been stripped and the tracker is in the
    middle of a landfill site.

Nah, not in the French example I gave. The owner informs Plod and gets
a Crime Number. The owner in turn then lets the tracking company know
and they activate the tracker for Plod to chase it up.
