Bike trailer electrics

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Jan 5, 2007.

  1. Sorted. The bloody thing was intermittently blowing the tail light fuse
on the car, taking out the trailer tail lights too.

Put new rear light units on it (autojumble bargain) and it didn't cure
it, so I thought sod it, and threw it at the trailer specialist who
found that one of the side running lights was badly corroded inside and
the earth strap had fractured and periodically would touch and short
    out.

Oh, and the trailer jack plug wasn't too clever either. Why do they
build nice trailers and fit such cheap electrics to them?

Bill for new plug, two new running lights, and an hour's labour and VAT
was £60, and I won £25 in an office raffle today, so that was OK. I
daresay I'd have sorted it myself given time, but it's been pissing rain
and I haven't got a garage big enough to do the work in. So a bargain,
    really

Anyway, somebody wanted to borrow this thing recently - who was it? 'Cos
    it's sorted now.

    In communiqué
    <1hrhe41.otefzo1dmtlm3N%>, The
My trusty Tarn has had several new lighting boards over the years. One
of the nice things about it as that you can use standard pre-wired
board from Halfrauds which you store inside and only fasten on for duty.

When I had the CR_V I came to use the trailer to find no lights. Spent
ages tracing the relay in the back of the Honda to no avail. When I
eventually took it in to the supplying dealer (car and towing
attachment) they told me it just needed 're-setting' by removing and
replacing a big blade fuse under the bonnet. This was only required
apparently because the battery had gone flat because of standing too
    long alarmed in freezing weather.

A bit miffing as it happened just as I was setting off for France on a
Bank Holiday weekend with the Tart on the trailer ready for attention to
a bit of a problem. Had to leave it at home and sort the problem myself
with parts supplied when I got back, but that as they say is another
    story.

  4. Hmph. Much of the time modern auto electronics are too bloody clever by
    half.

Should be OK - the guy there is one of the foremost Ducati Beveldrive
specialists so I think he's quite familiar with bikes turning up on a
    trailer :).

Thanks for the offer tho', I'll keep it in mind.
