    It's shit.

WTF is this 'dress code' all about?

Hiking shoes and a 1960s Italy shirt are against the dress code for
every bar on the main street, ffs.

I gave up and came back to the hotel for a cuppa.

Don't think I'll bother doing an overnight stay here again.

Hahaha. It's weird, isn't it? I remember a mate being refused entry to
the Jam House because he was wearing trainers, but was subsequently
let in wearing sandals (the only other footwear we had to hand).

Think of an average brummie that almost lives in trainers and a
    birmingham city top.

Does the policy make slightly more sense now?

p.s. "they was only keeping you out because you is welsh, innit?"

ITYF 'colours' are banned in most clubby-type-bars throughout the
    country, & with good reason.

I quite like the West Midlands and have some happy memories of Birmingham
    in particular.

There are much worse large towns and cities.

So you went out to a city's bars and clubs in a /football/ shirt and
you're surprised you weren't let in!

    Idiot.

Birmingham as a whole isn't any worse than most other large cities , but
Broad Street is a very bad place to go out for a nice drink.
It's exactly the sort of thing you see on "when pissed up idiots start
    fighting" reality TV shows

My favourite example of that sort of shite was when I was drinking in one of
the shittiest bars in Sheffield. We'd gone there because of a drinks offer
that was particularly good, and I'd gone in with my bird and a couple of her
mates. Got straight in due to the usual bouncer rule of always letting fit
birds in. A mate tried to ring me, so I walked outside to be able to hear
him. Tried to walk back into the bar - "Sorry mate, no hoodies". I did
eventually get in, and of course, everyone inside was scum and looked like
they dressed in Burtons in the dark.

Another thing that occasionally happens around our way is that a nightclub
will start IDing every bloke coming in to improve the ratio of blokes to
    birds...

If you think Brum is bad now, you should have seen it 20 years ago.

You need to get out of Wales because you've gone totally native and
seem to have lost all idea of what's going on outside the
    principality.

Birmingham is like anywhere, you need to know where to go, and if you
go drinking on the main drag then it's invariably shit and full of
    chavs.

For Steve, there are plenty of pups in Brum that won't require you to
dress up, next time you're there, drop me an email and I'll list some
    out for you.

Zinc (http://www.zincbar.co.uk/). Although it's now closed in favour
of it's sister restaurant 'Bank' which is just round the corner.

  16. I agree that Birmingham is much improved. I've been there several
times over the last year or so for various reasons. I've stayed at the
Macdonald Hotel in New St which was very pleasant and then had a very
pleasant meal up in the Jewelery Quarter area. On another occasions
I've been taken to have a properly original Balti in the area where
they started being made. I don't typically venture into pubs on my
own but the ones in the Jewelery Quarter looked fine to me and not
unduly rowdy or constrained by dress codes.

  18. I have a SF 49ers NFL shirt.. more as a souvenir of going to a game at
Candlestick Part (I refuse to call it 3Com Park) than anything else.

I don't think I've ever worn it. I don't really have the build for it.

Aha - I thought it was looking a bit tired when I went a couple of
months ago, I guess time for a refit. Bank in Brum is excellent and
does really good cocktails (and is miles better than the one in
    Aldwych).

My favourite place when I lived there was the Bucklemaker on St Paul's
Square, definitely worth a look if you're in the city centre or
jewellery quarter. Still seems to be well-regarded
