I've booked my Blackbird in for it's pre France summer tours, and when
it was last serviced the mechanic noted that there was a very slight
notch in the headrace. That was maybe 3000 miles ago (now at 24k
miles), and although never picked up at MOT I've got a price to do it
whilst it's being serviced. I've had someone sit on tha back whilst I
move the bars, and I suppose I could feel a slight notch - so is *any*
lack of smoothness a sign of needing a headrace, or would it be OK for
    x more miles?

  2. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Danny
It's OK until the MOT bloke says it's not.

I'd always recommend new races or at least a clean and grease, if you can
    feel any notchiness.

My personal preference is for taper-roller replacements.

  4. New bikes still come with ball bearing head races?? The last newish
bike I changed was a P plate Bandit and they were tapered, but they
    could have been done before.
