    Don't know if this is relevant, but had the same problem on the 400,
    replaced it with a heavy duty one, (cant remember what brand..will look when
    I get home tonight if you are interested) haven't had a problem with it
    since (except the possible alternator!). I'm only a newbie tho' so not real
    sure.

    Eddie,
    I had a '97 bird and it burnt out the regulator/rectifier at 30,000 K's,
    also taking the battery and head lights with it.. I bought a second hand one
    from a wrecker and mounted it on a heat sink with a CPU (12v) fan over the
    top hardwired into the tail light. The bike then went on to do 80,000 K's
    without a problem. The whole mod took me about 4 hrs to fit and $30 from the
    computer store.
