I have already discovered "Club des Sommeliers."
Not sure if there is a Lidl within striking distance. There is certainly
one in Limoges. We tend to go to SuperU for basics and Casino for more
    interesting stuff.

BTW for French runners etc. I discovered last trip that Casino (at least
the one in Eymoutiers) 24 hour petrol pumps accept British Visa cards.

Be aware, though, that not all Visa cards are equal. Then again, I'm
pretty much unable to use my UK Visa[1] card in France these days, as
I failed to memorise the PIN they sent with the new (well, a couple of
years ago) C&P card, and it's not possible to change it to a number I
can remember using a foreign machine.

[1] Not that I really want to, but there might be times when I'd use
it, as an easier way of doing a virtual currency transfer, IYSWIM.

OK. Just lucky then. The chances of any UKRMer having the same type of
card as SWMBO are probably tending towards zero. Shows it is
increasingly worth giving it a go in extremis, before trying to
    negotiate with a passing local.
We have a Nationwide flex account to make use of their free use abroad
policy. Unfortunately our nearest ATM is at 'La Poste' which doesn't
accept it, though almost all other outlets seem to. Not tried that in a
    pump yet.

Oh no, I wasn't trying to say that they wouldn't all work, just that
the _may_ not. I really don't know, but anyone relying on it had
    better make sure first.
Oh aye. I did find some years ago, before the UK went to C&P, that one
UK card of mine, I forget which, would work quite happily in leClerc
24hr petrol stations, without any request for a PIN. Not sure I was
too happy about this, but it was there in an emergeny, IYSWIM.

I have a couple of JP Chenet glasses, with bendy stems - it messes
with people's heads if you given them their 3rd or 4th glass of wine
    served in one...

now that, I like. However, the cheapest I've ever found it in the UK
    is around £3.50 a bottle :-/

well, it's by definition: e.g in the Tesco at Coquelles it's in the
"peasant wine" section. I don't mind the stuff, but as has been said,
at the budget end of the market, you can get better for similar or
    even fewer money.
    A. is on an extended Pinot Grigio kick at the moment - I really don't
like it much; it's OK to swill and wash down pizza etc. but on it's
    own it's just so...."meh".
    heh.

Yeah, I posted about it when I found it a month or three ago, but it
seemed that, although all the other cheap wines were priced the same
as here except in pounds==euros, that particular one was much more
expensive. I assumed it must be just that they thought the UK market
would pay more for a 'known' wine than would the French.

As it happens, we did a side-by-side tasting agounst a decent bottle
of the stuff last week, and although it didn't have anywhere near the
depth of flavour or nose, it didn't actually taste bad by comparison.

I've just found the thread - actually Sept. 2007. We have a Lidl
that's opened a month or so ago a few minutes walk away - I've not
ventured into it yet; it's a bit close to home, someone I know might
see me. But I might put a hoody on and sneak in and see what wine
    they've got.
Although I am mostly happy to live here[1], the UK is definitely a
"rip off" for some things - wine being one of them.

[1] though if I had no work/family commitments etc. I'd retire to the
    Cote d'Azur in a trice.

    yes, I know.
I'm not saying it's no good - just that you can do better for the
money. I can't remember any names, but last time I was in Cite Europe,
I bought some JP Chenet plus some other "cheapies" - others, for less
    money, where just as good.

Oh, granted. Just that when in a hurry, with only 5 minutes before the
doors close, I tend to grab a familiar name within budget (the couple of
notes left) [1]. There are others which we regularly bring back that you
would shudder at. Still innumerable cheapos from SuperU to try, as we do
each trip. Many have been crossed off the list though.

[1] Though, as I said before, given the trend in the euro at the moment
I may be changing my strategy.

heh - not necessarily. I've even tried the big plastic bottles of red,
that are OK for washing down BBQ food.

And - *gasp* - when in Spain I've been known to buy the cardboard
    cartons of Sangria...

  20. My local Mexican restaurant does *really* nice Sangria. And
    Margaritas.
