An obvious point to some, but many sparkies aren't Part P registered,
so be sure to ask the question.

My 1996 MSc Information Systems Engineering Project Report was
    "Interfaces for Cases".

The last paragraph included Weiser's 1991 'new Cartesian dictum' :

"I am where I compute, instead, of I think therefore I am".

Part of my time today was spent trying to help some new users round our
new Siebel CRM - things haven't necessarily got much better lately IMO.

And how do they check something that's hidden in walls?
Bit obvious, a brand new bathroom in a house for sale a year or so
    from now.

Thankfully my brother has just finished completely refurbing his flat
and has a tame chappie who can self-cert and does good work.

    shower with a new electric
    shower connected to an existing
shower circuit is this notifiable work?

A No, providing the shower is a like
    for like replacement.

That's when they TELL you you need/must have a sparkie. It certainly doesn't
mean you have to get one.

The last time my old man let the Gas Board in his house to check his work
(he wasn't Corgi registered although he was a gas fitter/plumber in his
yoof), they nearly gassed him and my mum to death through not re-fitting the
appliance as well as my dad originally fitted it some time (months) before.

They're a bunch of useless fucking shites and I can't imagine sparkies are
    any different.

  9. Good grief, our HIPs survey took 5 minutes, no questions asked, no
certifications required, the only note we got was the fact we don't use
energy saving light bulbs. They didn't even ask about the obviously new
    conservatory.

  10. Some are just cunts, same as any trade.
I've come across some 'orrible bodges, mostly done by amateurs
/numpties, but one or two by sparkies /numpties.

    Test meters!

They are really only checking safety. I have a mate in Chelsmford that does
    this for a living.
Just tested a neighbours house (Thatched cottag) because he now has to have
a new cert every 10 years for the insurance.
    Good point, well argued.)

Oh that's good to know. Maybe the replacing the loft insulation
should be brought forward then :) I've already got newfangled bulbs
    all round.

  13. Well he popped his head through the loft entrance, but he never tested
the depth of the insulation as you can only see it further inside the
loft due to flooring. I was thinking of replacing it for that reason and
I'm glad I never bothered. I can't remember the exact scores but the
actual score versus potential maximum difference was very small, and
considering we have a 1930s house with no cavity wall insulation I was a
bit stunned. I think we won on the fact most of the double glazing has
been replaced recently so it's K glass and the boiler is a fairly new
    combo.

We also have a fairly scary electrical system, we have two meters and
two separate fuse boxes as there used to be a storage heater system in
place, our tame leccy told us to rip it out and I wish I'd done it, as
an example we can't have metal light switches anywhere in the house as
there's no earths to the switches. The HIP guy never even looked at the
    meters.

When we bought the place the surveyor must have climbed completely up
because he told us we needed a cover on the water cistern and that's
right at the end of th eloft away from the hatch.

I'm going to do the insulation because I'm boarding out the loft for
storage and it'll be 'sealed' in so makes sense to replace it with
good stuff. We may be moving but I'd rather have a good warm house
for the next 18 months to 2 years.
Mine's a mid-80s one, but has been re-glazed. Might investigate
cavity insulation but I've heard bad things about damp problems after
having it done. My view is the cavity is there for a reason.
Jeeze, although my Dad did warn me years ago to avoid metal switches.
He's been in the building trade for years and always said metal
switches were a bad idea as the case was hard to earth.

The whole thing is a complete waste of time and money. When we were
selling, not one single person asked to see the HIP.
