Blood needed!

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Zebee Johnstone, Jul 11, 2006.

  1. This is from the NSW Red Cross, but the problem is the same in every
    state.

    ===========
We are opening this Saturday at the below centres and with hours
mentioned, to help combat low donor numbers due to colds and flu and
    prevent any serious blood shortages.

We need to get in 90 donors in Parramatta and 40 in Liverpool. As
great ongoing supporters of ours, we are happy to offer group bookings
especially for bikers, or of course, individual appointments as per usual!

Any help with circulating this message to Western Sydney Motorcycle
Groups would be greatly appreciated. If anyone is keen, best methods to
    follow are:

    * For group booking, call Cherry on 9840 5524

    * For individual or small group booking call 13 14 95.

    Thanks
Clarence St open 8am to 3pm for whole blood and Apheresis donors
Chatswood 8am to 3pm for whole blood only
Parramatta open 8am to 3pm for whole blood only
Liverpool 8am to 3pm for whole blood only
    Nepean will not be opened

Next time BT goes in, I'm going to sever all ties with the past and
    make an appointment too.

    Why so long, Peter?
On other occasions at the Blood Bank I've had to fill in the usual
questionnaire that asks about high risk behaviour, and the window used
to be 6 months for tattoos or unprotected hetero sex.... when did it
become 2 1/2 years? (I can see why there's a shortage of donors these
days!!!) If the sero-conversion window (or whatever it's called) for
HIV is a mere month/6 weeks, why put a 2 1/2 year limit on??? Is there
a 2 1/2 year risk of Heps??? other nasties????

Nobody has explained this to me and I would really appreciate an
explanation. I figured after my final re-screening for post-attack
nasties (completed only yesterday) I would be ok to donate blood again.

How bloody long do I have to feel like a potential leper????

  7. Cancer. They wait for as long as it takes to be officially 'in
remission' which is around the five year mark - even when it was
something with virtually no chance of recurrence.

  8. My stuff up. I meant that it is normally taken as five years of being in
    remission before being deemed cured.

I gave last week, first time ever. I've been a gunna for a looong time.
At least now I'll feel less guilty should I ever need a beaker of
blood, a pint of plasma or a hip flask of haemoglobin.

When I go they take 450 ml of Plasma and 360,000,000,000 platelets. (they
are really small plates). Every two weeks so I must be producing more than a
few platelets a day. About a billion an hour. :)

Well as soon as they either reopen the volunteer donation centre in the town
where I live and work (unlikely and I don't expect them to do that) or send
the mobile van there (which they promised to do on a regular basis when they
announced the closure but haven't yet and that was 18 months ago, which is
bloody slack!) then I'll donate again...

Had the same problem here in Taree after their centre received some storm
    damage & was closed.
Over the next 18 months the van arrived here once & despite having an
appointment we had a 2 hour wait.
Chalked up over 70 now & could get in a few more before I'm too old.
