Bloody bees

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Apr 20, 2009.

  1. They've swarmed. A swarm the size of a large rugby ball is hanging from
a tree in our back garden. Am togging up (as it were) to collect the
    bastards.

  3. There is something related to this which was causing me a wondering just
yesterday as I was inspecting the blossom on my Asian pear trees: the bees,
which are mostly conspicuous by their absence this year and the last; do
they generally belong to someone or are they free and wild things?

If they are owned, how far have they come? If free spirits, where do they
    live?

I know little about bees, obviously, but I did miss them last year... unless
the late frost was more to blame for the lack of pears.

  6. A few miles
Hollow trees, holes in brickwork, under eaves, that sort of thing
Well, we've collected the swarm and hope we got the queen in so doing.

  7. It is early. The Doctor checked the hives today and found some queen
cells, but now reckons she must have missed one.

Oh, and she forgot to do up her veil properly just now so had the
edifying experience of bees buzzing around *inside* it. Luckily they
were in benevolent swarm ood rather than fighting mad, so she didn't get
    stung.

    <Puts irritating legal hat on>

Does kept = owned? I would have thought they were 'animals wild by
    nature'.
I remember an 'air pollution' incident that turned was actually bees
shitting after being cooped and in need of a dump up during a cold snap
    early in the season.

  9. They are. You can't sue somebody for what their bees do, because you
can't prove that they belong to anyone, for one thing. Nicely enshrined
in law. Had to check on this when we had a swarm that went down
someone's chimney a few years ago.

The pall of smoke from the MZ hung over the back of our gaff, but to be
fair, the little sods had swarmed before it happenbed.
