Well, I'l be bloody sure to look after my keys better. Snapped a key of
the Sprint before Xmas. Long story. Just picked up the blank that had to
be ordered from Triumph. Just under £15!

  3. Triumph used to use the same blanks as Kawasaki. If they do, then any
locksmith can probably supply one, and cut it.

Go to an Alfa dealer and see how much a new key is for your 156 ;-)

    Talking of keys.
Where can I get a key cut to fit my Givi Top Box?
I bought a complete new lock as I couldn't get the key, only to find the
farking lock doesn't fit (I think it's for a Kappa!)
So if anybody wants a not Givi fitting lock with two keys I have one here.

Yes, but this really is just a key, no fancy electronics or anything.

I didn't try a locksmith, but I tried plenty of key cutters IYSWIM.

My local lockman cut me a new key for the VN (Kwaka) and it looked exactly
like the original, but no amount of fucking about could get it to turn the
ignition barrel or unlock the helmet locks. I binned it in the end.

Well don't break a Fiat key then. If 15 quid caused you grief, the cost for
a new Fiat key will have you committing sideways.

  13. A bloke at work has just had the electronic ignition go on his Brava. It
seems the keys are 'tied' to the ECU, and cost hundreds.

They indeed are, but it only costs hundreds if you don't have the red
key that allows reprogramming of other keys. And supposedly there are
    ways around that as well.

None of the Locksmith's I've tried seem to have the blank. They have so far,
all said that (well the 3 that I have tried) "We don't have that blank!"
    Apparently, it's quite unstandard?

Go to a less pikey locksmith. 'Panic Keys' near here are excellent.

    In communiqué <1ibc535.1witb1jtogpseN%>,
Indeed. They also use a special red IIRC master key. When SWMBO bought
hers, we discovered that despite having a spare normal ke,y the red one
was missing. I had to get very heavy with the car supermarket that
supplied it and took advice from our TSOs. Fortunately they eventually
ran it to earth at the auction place they had got the car from.

When she traded it in for the Punto the first question they asked was
"have you got the master key"?

    Seems a tad steep that.

I ordered a key for a 1982 Mercedes from a Merc main stealership from the
chassis number and it arrived next day, from Germany, for £12.

Worked as well, which was nice.

These bike things seem inordinately expensive sometimes, but I do see the
    attractions..

Sounds right. A replacement for my Fiesta is in the order of 400
    quid.

There are ways to significantly reduce this amount though. I bought a Mondeo
off a chap who'd lost his only ignition key and it cost me under £50 to put
    it right.

With Fiat keys any decent auto-locksmith can copy the normal key and
programme it for around £10. Get a couple of copies made and programmed and
it pretty much voids the red key issues. Also if you snap a Fiat key
accidentally it's very simple to swap the chip into a new key.
