    Hi,
Someone is selling one of these and it's cool, but I can't find any
info beyond basic stats on the internet. Most everything I've found
has been in German. I've never seen so little information about a
    motorcycle before.

I'm interested in knowing about the quality of the engine and ride
compared to other airheads. I know there was a time when BMW was not
manufacturing the quality they once were, but I don't know what years
that was. I've always wanted an airhead, but the old ones are getting
old and the new ones are too expensive. This one is in great shape
with 19k of miles for about 5K, seems reasonable if it's not an odd
    bike out.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much
    Barry

93 was one of the last years for the airheads and I don't think they made
more than a few hundred R100r's any given year in the early 90's, which may
be why you can't find a lot of info on them. From what I've read, they're
not particularly "collectable" and you're going to have the kind of upkeep
issues you'd expect from any bike that's 10+ years old. For the same kind
of money that you're talking about, you should be able to find a similar
oilhead from the late 90's or newer and you'll have a lot better luck
finding info/support. For that matter, you could buy a new R for $10K and a
lot of late model low mileage R's for $8K +/-.

from my somewhat limited experience, they're a good bike. the price seems a
    bit high but
not totally daft. there's a bmw riders net/newsgroup you could talk with.
i don't have the url handy, tho.
    good luck, samm

  4. Flat as a fart compared to earlier boxers, and very thirsty. They handle
    well, though.

  5. 5K might be a little high, but they seem to be well thought of.

Lots of spares and DIY advice out there.
Probably easier to work on than the later oilheads.
    Suspension should be pretty decent.
Nikasil barrels are pretty much indestructible.
Should be good for 100-200k miles.
    Likely to hold value well.

    Weaknesses:

    Valeo starter.(all late model airheads)
Alternator rotor (same on all airheads)
    Emissions cruft.(all late model airheads)
paralever (more of an isue on the GS models).
Needs ~10k clutch spline lubes (same on all airheads)
