BMW ABS Light

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Pisshead Pete, Oct 12, 2004.

  1. Big horse GS thing. ABS light is annoying. Anyone know how to fix it
(stupid question)? Brakes seem to work fine tho' may have a bit of a
surge. Please let Clem know at the dinner.

    To disable ABS
When riding offroad on certain surfaces some riders prefer to disable ABS.
    To do so:

    1.. Turn ignition off.
2.. Press and hold the ABS reset button.
    3.. Turn ignition on.
4.. Release the ABS reset button.
5.. Start the engine and ride off.

6.. If the ABS lights continue flashing, ABS is disabled until the next
    time you switch on normally.
The brakes work normally so now it is possible to lock your wheels.
If no lights are on (and you hear that grating clunk as you move off) then
ABS is still engaged - stop and try again.
7.. Press the ABS reset button to stop the annoying flashing and leave one
red light permanently on. (You have to repeat this at intervals).
    ABS Reset
Another situation that owners should possibly either know how to deal with
or else carry a set of printed instructions for, is ABS reset.
In certain situations e.g. after an off, the ABS needs to be reset. You can
see this because the red ABS warning lights flash not together as they
normally do but alternately. The brakes are unaffected.

Normally a dealer has to reset the ABS. However several owners said that the
last thing they wanted after coming off was to have non-functioning ABS. The
following procedure can also be used. It is useful to carry a short length
of wire stripped at both ends.

    1.. Turn ignition off.
2.. Remove pillion and rider seats.
3.. Locate the 3 wire plug by the toolkit and remove the blue termination.
(It's for diagnostics so is not connected to anything).
4.. Insert one end of wire into the *middle* socket.
5.. Clip the other end firmly to ground.
6.. Turn ignition on. Note that the two ABS lights continue flashing
    alternately.
7.. Hold ABS button down for 8 seconds. The bottom ABS light should stay
    on, the top one off.
    8.. Release the ABS button.
a.. If the reset is successful, both ABS lights come on.
b.. If you didn't count to 8 or your ground is not good, then the top
ABS light stays off. Start again and/or try pressing the ABS button before
    turning ignition on.
9.. Turn ignition off, remove wire, reconnect plug and refit blue
    termination.

  3. Thanks John. Unfortunately he's just left before the 'puter was turned on.
Can someone print this out for him?

ABS light is the first indication that the battery is not getting fully
charged or isn't holding a charge, so any other remedies won't work
consistently unless the battery is in good nick.

This worked a treat thank you very much John.
I had Moike holding a lump of fence-wire earthing out the lead while I
was pushing buttons and counting and I'm now awash in ABSie-goodness.
(There was even a convenient dirt-road at Surf-Beach for the
    test-ride!)
    Thanks again,
    Clem

Yep I did have that problem before I replaced the battery thanks
Coney, but this was a different, more persistent thing.

How're you doing these days, old timer? It sounded like you were
going to be leaving a whole lot behind at the hospital...

Very happy to pass on the "Good Oil" this and many other incantations are

    Gday BT
Left half my large bowel at the hospital on the 29th Sept. It takes ages to
get that hospital smell out of ones system.
Will have radiation & chemo in a month or so to quieten the remaining
primary cancer in the body wall, then they'll use chemo on the secondaries
in liver & lymph nodes if symptoms arise.
My stomach looks more unattractive than usual thanks to infection in the
wound, but it didn't stop me having my first ride today since the operation.
Should have topped up the painkillers first, though. I didn't realise there
were so many sharp bumps in the roads.
It was beaut to be on the bike again, and I didn't even stop singing when a
bee stung me on the chin. [1]

  14. Glad to see you're up and about again Coney.
Pity you don't still have the GS--the pus would've matched the paintwork.

I'm hoping to be headed down your way for a week or so around
February. Perhaps we could go for a ride, once I've finished standing
awestruck in the middle of Smack's palace-like shed.[1]

Never thought I'd see a forum about shed building.

You wanna book the palace for Feb?

A ride would be great....and it will be about time for an Ausmoto National
    Dinner.

As for the shed, smack's bar in the corner of his shed is bigger than your
    whole #2 building!
