It means the brakes were so powerful, they pitched him over the bars and he
faceplanted the concrete outside his garage.

I looked - but the R1100RT appears to be unloved, as reflected by the
prices - they're cheaper than a decent airhead RT.

The 1150RT is a better bike and the airhead appeals to nostalgic airheads.
The R1100RT is only bought by pensioners on a tight budget.

Telelever bikes come in other guises.

One of which is too tall, two of which are too sporty (ie.
uncomfortable) and one of which is too naked.

    (I think that covers it - GS / S & RS / R)

I'd have looked at the 1150RT, but they're still way too expensive.

If I was buying a post-millenium tourer it would not be an 1150RT. I would
want something that could whisk me to Bavaria at 120mph on the autobahn in
comfort. FJR1300 or Sprint ST are probably prime candidates should I want
    such a thing.

  9. Is anyone else reading the thread title and thinking of underwear that
randomly drops your left bollock out, then ties your cock in a knot?

  10. Tip. From bitter experience, albeit a while ago, do not use anything but
the genuine BMW clutch plate in an attempt to save a couple of quid.
Iirc, it was a Borg and Beck I fitted with confidence, as a B&B plate
had never let me down in all the car clutches I'd done.
It lasted a couple of months, then cracked and had to be taken out.
Total pain in the arse, as you say.
Still, I got handy with gearbox removal on that one.

After last weekend, I was thinking about the ideal 2-up touring bike, and I
was idly mulling over the notion of what a GL1200 would be like if Honda had
spent the last 20 years making it better instead of bigger. After a bit, I
realised I was thinking about something very like the current GL1800. Oh
    dear.

Oilhead engines are pretty bullet proof and easy to service.

Clutches? Splines can go south pretty quick if they do not stay lubed up.
A real pain to get to and I've done my share. Also, tranny seals are known
to harden and leak and tranny oil may saturate the clutch. BMW does not
use higher temp. Viton seal in the tranny's that sit atop a very hot
catalytic converter and harden in a few years. I had to change all 5 seals
in my tranny a few years ago and it requires a complete breakdown (looks
like a fold-over to do it) to do as some are installed from the inside out.

Then their is an ongoing issue with their rear drive units that puke
bearings at a very low mileage. Something like 4-5 failed in the 2007 U.S.
Iron Butt Rally (over 10,000 miles in 10 days?) and rider's were eliminated.
Less are expected to enter in 2009 rally due to ongoing reliability issues
    of their rear drive units.

BMW needs to clean up their issues and make their bikes more reliable. Even
their new K1300's are having electrical issues with their newly adopted
switchgear which looks like a very cheap Japanese knock-off for what they
charge for them. Some don't even start when new fresh off the dealer's
floor. Other's don't start somewhere down the road. Sad.

1100RS. Horrible bike with really harsh vibration. The 1100S is sadly the
same. Surge at low speeds also, poor injection. And the EVO ABS brakes are
    awful.

Really? Seems ok to me, certainly much less vibration than the Hardley
I saw in the States recently. That could have pogoed it's way across
the road if the rider hadn't been a fat bastard. My brakes are Brembo,
    are they better [1]?

[1] Not that I really care that much :)
