This was the same weekend that I ended up towing him on his Dresda'd
810 Kettle[1] all the way back from Morecombe to Leicester. Happy
    days.

[1] And if anyone has to ask whym they're just too young to
understand. It'll be the first guess of anyone who knows GT750s at
    all.

Towing him with an XT? **** me, you were insane. Really.
Either it had one of those horrible 3-1 spannies on it and it burned a
    piston...

    ....or the alternator went pop?

    It's heavy, get over it!
I see the latest RM is 95kg, which is pretty amazing for such a missile
IMHO. What did the XT weigh anyway? <googles> 155kg, well not too bad
compared to some of the so called off roaders now.

Naah, it was a doddle. For me, at least. He was the insane one,
especially as we never thought about having a QR rope, so it was just
tied round the steering yokes. He at least had the foresight to carry
a rope, as it wasn't the first time it'd happened.
Give the man a coconut. Middle piston had a half-inch hole burned
    clean through it.

A guy in our village had a Dresda Kettle with that dreadful 3-1 thing on
it. First pillion ride I ever had was on the back of that bike.[/QUOTE]

TBH I don't remember the exhaust at all, so it's quite possible it
wasn't a 3-1. But they were notorious in any tuned form, especially
bored out, for the middle pot to go through insufficient cooling.

A friend of mine raced one for a couple of seasons and he used a
different grade plug for the middle cylinder plus ran it on pre-mix to
minimise the risk of seizing it. IIRC he had a very expensive set of
expansion chambers that had been liberated from one of the old 750
race bikes that were around in the early seventies and it always
sounded as if it was about to go bang.

  13. I ran my Kawasaki H1 triple on a B8 plug in the middle and B7 on the two
    outer pots.

Can't really see that running on pre-mix is a good idea, though.
Especially not on a Suzuki, as Suzis had a superb oil delivery system
that squirted the oil onto the bearings via separate pipes, as well as
feeding it through the inlet tract.

I think all Suzuki triple race spec engines had the lube pump removed
on the basis that pre-mix was guaranteed to work whereas a pump
_might_ fail plus it was added weight.

  16. Yes, for a race bike, I can see the logic. And engine longevity didn't
matter if it lasted for just one race.

For a road bike, though, ditching it is daft.

Years ago, I met a guy who was drag racing Kawasaki H2 750s in
Superbike's Ultimate Streetbike series. He was getting into the 11s,
IIRC: seriously quick, for a street legal bike, 20+ years ago.

Anyway, he had a lever on the bars which, on the run, cut the oil
delivery. His rationale was that he needed every last bit of undiluted
petrol oomph, and there would be anough oil swilling around in the cases
    to last for a quarter-mile.

His bikes held together, so he might have had a point. I'd not have had
    the balls to do it.
